anyone here ever use professional manual flashes with their d70? like the vivitar 285 or handle mount flashes like sunpak 544 or 555, or metz ctl-1?
I have this concern that if i throw my 285 on my d70's hot shoe it might fry it, or if i get a pc adapter and attach a handle mount to my d70 it might do the same thing. I just think I might have heard about something like that happening before but I don't really know. I usually like to fire them off camera anyways, but I think it would be nice for some occasions if I could just stick one on top...I just wanna know I won't fry my camera. Thanks for any responses. |

I can't remember exactly what it is about using a non-dedicated flash that was not specifically designed for the D70 but I do remember reading something about the electronics being more sensitive and operating at lower voltages or something like that. I am pretty sure it is not specific to just the D70 but all DSLR's. I also remember seeing a hot shoe attachment that has some type of protection built in to protect the camera. I will see if I can find the info.

I found something.
"watch that it's not so old that the trigger voltage is so high it blows out the D70. Just put a voltmeter across the old flash's hot shoe connections and avoid it if it's around 300V!"
Here is an accessory that is suppose to reduce the risk at least. Available at B& H for $50.00
