I just received a Lexar RW-019 Firewire CF card reader. I needed to transfer my Sandisk USB 2.0 reader to our other PC for my wife's cam, so I went with a firewire reader to replace it. The RW-019 is the same reader that Rob Galbraith uses in his CF card speed tests :-)
This was a "quick & dirty" test , transferring 129MB worth of Canon RAW files from the card to my PC's hdd. I ran the test twice for each reader, and I deleted the small .THM files before transferring so that I was only copying the larger files.
Results:
Sandisk USB2.0 Reader: 61 seconds, or 2.11MB/s
Lexar Firewire reader: 14 seconds, or 9.21MB/s
Yep, you read that right, over 4 times as fast, almost two 10D RAW files per second. At this point, it's limited by the read speed of the card, not the reader, so with a faster card, results could be even better.
I think I'm gonna love this reader.
