here's what I heard
the f/1.4 have a better construction
the f/1.4 is faster (pretty obvious huh!)
both lenses are soft wide open
the f/1.8 suffer from corner softness (but the crops factor help for that)
If you use both lenses at say f/2.8 you can't tell the difference in the image.
Is that accurate?

except your wallet will be much lighter with the f/1.4

Well don´t forget that the USM motor allows full time manual focus while in autofocus mode and it´s almost completely silent compared to the 1.8.
Also since you have 8 aperture blade diaphragm in the 1.4 vs. 5 blades in the 1.8 the bokeh looks much nicer with the 1.4. I personally spent the extra money for the 1.4 mainly because of bokeh and the USM motor and I think it was worth the money but that´s something you alone can decide. I had a 50mm 1.8 mkI and it was great but I don´t miss it at all. |
