Wow! Thanks everyone! I look forward to getting started! I do live in Austin, great city...there are TONS of photo ops here. As far as west Texas...well you can only take so many shots of the desert and flatness! HA!
I'm not scared of constructive criticism. I'm learning and it goes with the territory!
I'm still updating some photos in my Portfolio, sorry for the incompleteness!
totaldis - All I can suggest is read read read. There are so many facets of the advertising world so it really does depend. Also, nothing is more helpful than experience...meaning, just do it. ( <- insert Nike commercial music here.)

Welcome Brian! I missed this thread as I posted a welcome message to another new member. So forgive me for cutting and pasting the orientation speech I prepared:
Welcome to DPC, [ insert new member name here ]. I am sure you'll enjoy it here. This is a place full of fantastic photographs, inspiring photography challenges and lively discussions. Let me point out some of the regulars for you:
bear_music (don't tell him I told you, but he joined the site when he was 19! He is now 20)
BradP - You'll notice he's won lots of ribbons, but has no camera - doesn't take a detective to figure out what's going on there.
There's RayEthier - I think he was 22 when he joined. His bio says he's 58. He is.
swinging_johnson_v1 - don't let the name fool ya! He is really "v2"
There's this DustDevil guy - He shaved his head so people will photoshop some new hair for him. Nuff said.
Running out of time, but so many people I need to warn you about - buzzmom, rex (that's short for "James"), buzzrock (yeah, you should called yourself "buzzrob" or something cool like that), colyla, laurielblack (she felt compelled to just jam nearly her whole formal name into the username field, but she's cool cuz she used to work at Dairy Queen and always gave DPCers free fries), Suntiki (I think she's having a fling with buzzrock), cpanaioti (I pulled a muscle just trying to pronounce that), Beetle (can't say anything bad about her, she knows where I live), there's TooCool and coolhar (they're cool cuz, well, it's in their usernames), and many others I am sure will chime in if I didn't mention them.
Then there's the Site Council - have you heard about this clandestine group? They recruit people from the membership and there is like this secret election process that makes that Vatican Pope Election thing pale in comparison.
Anywayz - I think I am the only normal, sane one in the bunch - although I have been known to make "the worst comments ever" once in awhile.
This concludes your orientation session. Help yourself to some donuts and coffee and press F1 if you ever need help. :P

..... I only have a few seconds before someone see me.....
call 911, Kpriest is really in cohorts with an internet slave photography cult.
I've been tied up for a month being forced to take pictures of things I have no idea what for. They call them "challenges", but, they are really a front for the cult to make money from there "prints".
Kpriest is really the 11th head "priest" of the site in charge of a small band of ninja attack cult killers called "the site council".
The most powerful of them is DustDevel, the Zpriest of this cult.
Leave while you can! Get help! Any one with a blue, red, or yellow ribbon is involved, and should not be trusted.
Go for help now young what ever your name is. Run, run, run and don't look back.
Oh no, some one is comming.......

Welcome and with that out of the way, RUN FOR YOUR LIFE while you still have a life, a job (assumed), a home (assumed also), hair (again assumed, but look what happened to DustDevil), and a reasonable sense of sanity! |

Before I forget, if you want to know the truth check out this thread...it will open your mind.
The Truth on DPC
And BradP is one of the slaves here on the site, so you can trust him....I think. Actually, I really don't know, that jingly noise in my brain keeps me awake at night.

welcome!!!
i see you have a Canon G5 :-)
I've had it for about two years and still use it occasionally so if you ever have any questions feel free to private message (pm) me.
You will definetely learn a lot here, my best advice - participate in the forums, enter challenges and vote and comment on images. Also browse through the top finishing images and see what made each so special. By the end of the first three months you will be more aware when taking photos and you will definetely see a marked improvement in your photography.
