While in Chicago last weekend I missed my opportunity to go to the Museum of Contemporary Photography. I learned about it on Monday- which was a holiday. I flew out early the next morning.
I was very curious to know what modern photographs are considered museum-worthy, and what makes them so? What modern photographs are considered art? I just started browsing the museum's website to find out. Do these images have something that stands out? Is it a matter of the photographer knowing someone? I'm not saying they don't deserve to be there, I'm honestly curious. I'd be interested to hear your opinions.

Sometimes it boils down to being at the right place in your career at the right time and with the patronage of the right people. Unlike painting or sculpture, photography lends itself to a wider body of aspirants, all of whom have access to basically the same raw materials. One's total body of work is of greater importance at the higher artistic levels of photography; as opposed to a few very outstanding examples of fine shotmaking. Also of great importance to high end art photography is the concept of theme and rigidity within that theme on a broad scale. A photographer may take a year or more to complete a thematic portfolio. Perhaps 10 percent of that total portfolio is put on exhibit, but it will maintain an even flow that carries the viewer through its emotional journey.
