To get a decent placement, check out my entries and do the opposite. :-) |

Photograph a bird of prey head-on with a sharp lens. Failing that, photograph a sunset with a sharp lens. Failing that, photograph a (whatever) with a sharp lens.
No soft lenses need apply.

I quickly looked at your challenge entries.. just a few things to try
- Use the 640 pixels you are allowed to
- Try cleaner background, dpc voters don't like yellowish background, it should be white. Play with levels/curves for that
- use Unsharp mask ( or similar sharpening tools) after you have resized your images for submission
When I started submitting here, I had no clue about post-processing and my first few submission were not sharpened or color-corrected and they scored really low :( |

It also depends on what you consider decent

"I took a photo....it needed composition
I composed a photo....it needed better lighting
I added lighting....it needed technique
I added technique....it needed sharpness
I added sharpness....it needed "wow"
I added "wow".....it landed a ribbon
dame it I dont have one....well I guess I need to add some more."

I've been trying this but after bombing the last two challenges I think I need to go back to basics and not try various dumb ideas.

I think the best way is to challenge yourself and compare results with images that inspire you. If you can produce images that you think have achieved what you want or close to it, you'd score & place high. |

You will find a style and subject matter that suits you and your audience. But browsing through your portfolio I belive you haven't found that yet. Your pictures are a little dull, not the subject matter in particular, but the composition, coloring, size and clarity. I would suggest this: Pick 5 photographers here who produce work you admire. Then for the next challenge, capture an image and post-process according to one of their styles to the best of your ability. This includes levels, curves, contrast, sat, desat, b/w, unsharp mask.
After you emulate, you actually begin to discover what you find interesting, successful and what doesn't work. And before you know it a style and source emerges. It takes time to post-process, but go overboard and then learn restrain. Most of all, force yourself to keep shooting.

LOL Robert ...
I look at your stuff all the time. I think you are great. I got a chuckle over the "what's wrong with my lighting pic?" I thought the duckie was great! What irritates me the most are people that leave comments that don't give any kind of "suggestion" at all. On my Decisions photo, I've got 2 comments, and not one of them tells me what to fix, just that they don't like it, or just say, "I'm giving you blah". I started just taking pictures of whatever I feel like and then asking for comments in the individual photo forum. I feel like I get more feedback that way.
So Robt ... can you look at my portfolio and tell me what you would suggest I work on? :) I appreciate your comments, just from what I've been reading about you! (I promise, I'm not a stalker! lol)

Well I have done my own little experiments and I am convinced this site is dedicated to 'what you know about photoshop' and nothing else. If you can accept that, submit your out of camera photos and slide the scale accordingly. If you can't accept that, then photoshop the hell out of your photos, add a title to describe what your photo doesn't show, and you are sure to get better scores since it is obvious that whatever the challenge states is not relevant.

I have to disagree with you Alienyst, I for one don't have the formula for ribbon restults although in one week I have one 2 of them. My photos are only slightly touched and my blue ribbon winner only sharpened and cropped and I use Paint Shop Pro 7 ;)
My advice is to do several settings of each photography session if you're doing a setup and check each result and have a go at it again until you're happy. On photos like the one I entered into the "Beauty" challenge, take photos at several different angles, several different settings, different times of day. The effort I put in seems to have given me good results.

I think that you need a basic understanding of photoshop in order to do well: the limitations of the site require you to resize your image, which means that you have to make that transition with care. The limitations of digital cameras often require that the photo is balanced for display on a monitor, rather than in print (for which many digital cameras are set up). So you may have to play a little with the colour and contrast controls. Plus D-SLRs are balanced towards undersaturation and softness, as their images are intended for post-processing.
So yes: you need to understand the basics of PS to present a picture on this website and have it looking its best. But good presentation has always been a requirement in good photography. The only thing that has changed is the process required in order to display your image: rather than learning how to print, then frame and matte a photo, you must learn how to digitally process the image. I don't see a problem.
