An Article released on May 27, 2005 ask this question. After reading the full article I found the paragraph below to be the best benefit if it happens.
But the manufacturers have focused on selling greater camera complexity rather than simplicity. Complexity comes in the form of a higher-priced "single-lens reflex" digital camera (costing just under $1,000 today but expected to decline to $500 or $600 by the holiday season), Chute said. The digital single-lens reflex, like its 35-millimeter film counterpart, can use interchangeable lenses.

donno about the prices in the US, but I can tell you that in the last two weeks the prices of the dSLRs have dropped down amazingly.
I have no idea why, but am definately going to take advantage of that pretty soon!

Maybe waiting it out until October for a 20D won't be a bad thing.

| I'd love it if they dropped the price on the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II to under $600. |

The Digital Rebel's retail price was $1399 CAD about 8 months ago. Now it's $999 at most with sales at $899 CAD at major retailers.
That's a big enough decline in retail price to answer 'yes' to your question above, I think...

It should be casual to the most oblivious observer that the recent introduction of lower cost DSLRs like the Pentax Ds, Olympus E300, and the Nikon D50 is cutting into sales of the higher priced models. This trend is welcome in my opinion, perhaps I will be able to afford a Canon 20D soon!

| i can see it. Although I still use my digital alot, any money ive spent on photography in the last 6 months has all been on film based stuff. To me film is kinda more fun. Digital definitely has great applications, but right now I find my d70 being more of a light tester for my medium format shots. |

As solid as the 1DsII is, it would make a good tool for smacking you over the head should you attempt such a smack. |

Well, the Nikon's answer to the Canon 1Ds Mark II, the DX2 is only $5000, sounds like a good thing.

Fortunately or unfortunately there is a more affordable 20D, its called the Rebel XT. Question is, will the 30D come with more features at the same price |

Let's hope the drop in price continues, if the recent Canon's rebate on some of it's camera and drop on the Rebel XT's kit by $50 to $949 is a clue, I'm hoping that soon, entry level dSLR's will start near $800 and mid level like the 20D around $1000. Perhaps in a few years, it will be even less than that. Let's all hope.

| i would guess that, after awhile...dslr prices will sink to near their film counterparts, Ie. rebel 2k is like 250 or so? and a brand new eos 1v or nikon f6 is like 2 grand or so. I bet eventually digital will get to that point, after it's 'newness' wears off. I still think it has a lot of 'newness' because consumers are getting more dSLR's now. and more models will be available. Lenses will stay the same. |

Just searching for some info on my new camera the pentax istDL.
Wal-marts have them on clearance around here. They were $600 and the walmart I was in had them clearanced for $400, that was with the 18-55mm lens.
Another walmart I was in had them clearanced for $450.00
$400 was just to good of a price for me to not give a DSLR a try.
Think I am going to like it.. |

Just pointing out htat this thread started in June, 2005. Don't think they've declined much. Yes, the dslrs are definitely cheaper, but, there's a lot more higher end stuff than there used to be as well.
