Imagine the wonderful shots we would get to enjoy and score. Basic editing rules apply, so that vision and the artistry of composition mean more than editing skills.

An interesting idea. Basically a free study with basic editing rules. Given the challenge title, though, I'm sure the voters would say that mine does not meet the challenge :) |

LOL ... Don't beat yourself up too badly, my friend. Your Thredbo Sunset is an excellent composition, while Blue Stork reveals an extrememly sensitive and artistic nature. I fell in love with the energy I felt from Caballera when I saw it as I made comments during the Lighting Challenge.
Besides, the Challenge title means that no one can mess up by misrepresenting the theme. An idea wrought by my just completing the scores for Decisions. |

I'm confused, isn't everyone already submitting the best they can do? I'm sure some would argue that they would need more time to do their absolute best. How would it be judged if the person voting doesn't know you and whether that is in fact your best?
Maybe I'm not getting the jest of the topic/idea. Sorry. |

I see what you mean about everyone doing their best every challenge. But that is always within the constraints of the week's theme. Perhaps a better theme title would be My Best Of The Week. We each feel we have our strengths. This would allow a free rein to shoot into that strength. Hopefully the results would be refreshingly pleasant and the scores would be very good for all. |

In other words, a Basic Editing open challenge that's a Free Study...

Don't worry, highroller. I´ll stay on my side of the tracks. I would not want to sully your doorway.

I think most of the people here, especially the less experienced photogs who are the larger number of users in the Open challenges, like to have a topic, or theme, to guide them. It helps keep us on the learning path as opposed to doing the same thing all the time. Free Study challenges, up until now, have been a privilege of membership. It seems to work. Is there a good reason to change?

Your reasoning makes a lot of sense. But every once in a while the smart teacher will let the class have an open period or offer an elective course in order to take stock of student inclinations and to help create a new benchmark for future expansion. If students continually are constrained, it is hard to know the areas for the teacher to help them advance.
While I appreciate there must be many benefits toward those in a position to pay-to-play, an open challenge to help find one's strength is a benefit to photography and its adherents, no matter upon what terms they migrated this site. Hopefully we all share a bond. |
