here is my entry. i got a few comments about it being a pretty butterfly and i thought i would share what it really is. It is a Luna moth.and alive too. after his photo session he was set free Luna Moths are brightly-colored - lime green to yellow-green - and average 3-4 inches wide and 5-6 inches long, including the long tail. The Luna Moth lives in North America, and flies only when it's dark. Approximately one week after emerging from its cocoon, a luna moth, unfortunately, dies. so it is rare that one is found during the day( as mine was). he was very cooperative with me. when he started flying around i tried to pick him up by the tail( and found that he was a strong critter) and his "tail" broke off which saddened me greatly as i meant no harm to him. I got about 40 photos of him before he got restless. I had decided not to enter the challenge untill i pulled these photos off the camera and was surprised how well they came out given my inexperience with my camera. here is my outtake but i thought the soft focus would knock me down even though the granules were in focus(but with a few blown hightlights). i scored alot higher than i thought i would because it is a personal fav( and we know how thoes usually do ;). i just wanted to share what i thought to be interesting about my photo and see if DPC'ers agree about my entry choice. and to let everyone know i am no bug murderer for the sake of a photo;)

I was wondering about the story behind your shot; even though I live in the natural range of the Luna Moth, I've never been priveleged to see one in the wild. A beautiful find, and a really nice capture. Thanks for sharing the story behind it.

I saw a couple of these last year in my back yard but I never knew what they were called. They are definetly some big critters and beautiful too. Thanks for the info. :-)

i knew what they were called but i thought that they only came out during the full moon until i did some research for my post here.i found it interesting and i thought it would be ok to post some info about the moth. i am always looking to learn something new( not just with photography) and wanted to share what i learned with other knowledge seekers...plus it might help when takeing a photo of this moth to know what it is and when it can be found.
