While shooting this past weekend I noticed that on my Rebel XT......... I have a 1GB memory card and I was using the Large Normal jpeg quality setting and the display says that I can hold 513 images on an empty memory card but I got home uploaded my images and I took 811.

How is this? Anybody else notice this before.

513 is an estimate based on an average photo. Some images compress better than others in JPEG, so images with large areas of flat color will take up less room on the card. I remember having one shot left in Italy, and I was actually able to take three.

In the same way, the burst mode is supposed to go up to 14 shots but the other day, I tested it with an underexposed shot that had no details in it and it bursted up to 51 shots.

an image with a lot fo contrast takes up more memory, on my 20d i have photos ranging from less than 1 meg to 6 megs, just depends on what you are taking pics of

On my CF card there is a differential margin of approx. 38% in L-JPG format, -17.5% in Fine and +25.5% in Normal. You will tend to gain more pictures in normal quality and loose less in fine quality. They base the number of pictures on a 1GB card as follows: Approx. 3.3mb in L-JPG fine and 1.7mb in L-JPG normal. As stated above by scalvert there are veritable involved such as compression. The more information in the picture will result in less compression. If you have a picture with low tonal range it will compress more that a picture with a larger tonal range.
