Alamy is an inbetween. Getty and Corbis are at the top :-)

Part of the problem is that there isn't much "inbetween". Alamy is often mentioned because frankly it's a lot easier to break into than many other stock agencies (they don't, for example, demand an initial submission of several hundred images, and they accept digital files).

There is another 'midrange' agency mentioned in a thread here - from the looks of it when it starts up it's looking to charge picture buyers prices roughly in the middle of microstock prices and Alamy prices.

kavey --

thank you for a very thoughtful and insightful post. i think it's safe to say that we can agree to disagree, but i appreciate you doing so without stringing me up in the process.

i think it's also safe to say that sales of stock photos and sales of prints are two completely different beasts.

but i see your point. :)

You're welcome...

I really love particpating in forums where one can exchange a wide range opinions without it becoming a case of trying to string anyone up and without it getting heated or personal.

Debating viewpoints and ideas is so very useful to me because sometimes it helps me clarify (or at least better be able to elucidate) my own thoughts. If I can't communicate why I hold a certain opinion, maybe I should reevaluate why I hold it!

And other times it introduces me to an argument I hadn't thought of before and influences my thoughts even to the point of changing my mind completely!

I like to think I'm open-minded so civilised discussion and debate is actually something I find very enjoyable.

You forgot to mention the real money-maker: getting people to follow your REFERRAL LINK TO SHUTTERSTOCK so you benefit from the MLM aspect, and collect pennies in commission on each of their sales as well ... : )

Seriously, that's one area in which I'm ignorant. How are people making out on that front?

I'm not that active there (52 pictures online right now), and I only have a couple of referred photographers. There's not much detail available about specific stats for the referred photogs, but I have roughly twice as many downloads of referred photos as of my own images ... lessee ... 225 x $0.03 = $6.75 for doing nothing more than having someone sign up after following my link (Hint) ... : )

Hint taken but... I'll be signing up following Pete's link OR we'll be working from a joint account... :o)
Thanks for letting me know, though!

how do you pull your shots off shutterstock or other stock agencies? I'd rather not help the corporate fatcats get fatter while my children starve. God Bless America.

In general, you write to them and tell them to terminate your account. It'll all be explained in their terms and conditions which (and I cannot say this strongly enough!) should have been read and fully understood before you started :-)

You can delete your images individually. To me this is the only way to be sure that they are gone from the site. Then request that your account be cancelled.

To delete, go to the status of uploads page and within each batch click the x next to each image to delete it.

I pulled off all but 4 (crappy) photos off of my shutterstock account...I got the "2005 Photographer's Market" and will try some of those contacts.

It's a great resource.

Hey, I've pulled out of dreamstime as well...I converted my whopping $3 to credits, so who wants me to buy a few of their photos?

Three big dollars up for grabs...let me know here on the thread and just give me the link to your photos on dreamstime.

If any of these would be of interest, would be chuffed if you'd consider them:

Chuffed = delighted, pleased, rather content...

Thank you very much - very kind of you!

Wishing you luck with whatever paths you follow instead.
