Ok, so here's the challenge for the math wizards out here (cuz I am horrible with math.)
I love the aspect ratio crop that is normal from the Nikon (10x15) and most of my shots are formatted for that size. I think that the most popular size for Print and Frame at DPCPrints is 11x14, so I've been thinking about doing the 'artsy' border thing.
I want to import my RAW file, crop to 10x15 and complete the editing work. At that point, I want to increase the Canvas Size to create a black border that I can add the Image Title and a text signature to. So the question is, what Canvas Size should I use to increase to that when resized down will fit exactly to an 11x14? At first I will probably center the images in the black, but may eventually, off set to have a wider portion of black at the bottom. This will become a Photoshop Action eventually.
1) Crop to 10x15@300dpi and edit.
2) Increase Canvas to x by y (pixels or inches)
3) Resize with no cropping to 11x14
4) Add Text Fields: Image Title/Artist Name.
5) Initiate Save as JPG.
Thanx in advance for your inputs.

OMG! When I paid my $25, they specifically told me there would be no math! ;-) |

Well the answer really is, you have an infinite number of choices. it all depends on how wide a border you want on the "short ends." Here's my suggested work flow. It's based on wanting 0.25 inches of border on each side, and letting the top and bottom be what they may:
- Perform all editing required
- Resize so longest dimension (width) is 13.5 inches
- Expand canvas to 11x14 inches, with the image centered
Your image height, in this instance, will be 9.0 inches. If you want more or less border on the sides, change the width of the image in the second step.

well... I haven't done any math in a while, I think this is right (test it before you do anything). Here goes... increase the canvas size +3 by +2 (13x17) and then resize to 11x14. That should keep the same ratio. I assume you know the border wont be uniform (a 1.5 inch border and a one inch border on the left and right)
hope this works
ok, my internet cut out as i was writing this, so if someone beat me to it, it's only because they cheated and stoppped my internet
edit: see?! plus, my border is a little large, I suggest you do what kirbic said. even though he is an internet cutting cheater

Thanx for the possibilities. I'm planning to try some options this weekend, so will let you know how it goes. May even write an Action Tutorial when its done (assuming that I can figure out how to create some interesting bevels to simulate matting).

It's really very easy and no math is required: Do your editing work as usual, save the image at 10x15 inches, then clone off a copy and flatten that. Create a new file at 11x14 inches with a black background and the same resolution as the image. "Select all" on the flattened image and drag the selection to the black background. Use the modify commands to shrink the image layer so it floats appropriately, and the "crossed arrows" movement tool to drag it where you want it on the black background. Discard the flattened clone image.
