Before you buy on-line or from the back of a magazine, you might want to see what the store front looks like.
Manhattan stores and
Brooklyn stores

Frank,
What a great compilation of the real world. Many of us who live in the NY metro area know the real story on the Brooklyn shops, but it's a great visual for the rest of the country. A picture does tell a thousand words. |

A few of those like Adorama, One STOP Camera, etc. I thought actually had nice store fronts.
I will say this, New York is a CITY. And as such, well, those buildings are the common style shops left over from 80 yrs ago when you had community stores instead of mega-stores.
However, I will also add that a lot of such stores are fly-by-night, grey market, asian importers. And yes, NYC has always had a strong market in the under-dealings area.
But I'd challenge you to post your own "local" "urban" photo/camera stores. I wonder if they'd look too different. Sure, they'd look different from the "Cell phone/pager/UPS/Fedex/electronics/cameras/and more" hybrid shops (which are really more akin to pawn shops that sell new merchandise.) *lol* And the house ones are of obvious concern. The big warehouse shots - well, that is NOT in fact unusual for wholesale sellers or direct merchants.
But yes, that strip does have a fair amount of "doubt" associated with it. And rightly so cause many of the shops are fly-by-night illegal marketers.

The real story is that they are fly by night, bait and switch shops. They try to get you interested with unrealistic prices where they cant possibly be making money. So the buyer places an order but then they get a phone call to "verify" the order. When the store calls they pitch either overpriced accessories or try to swap another model. If you dont go for the accessories, your order is out of stock and realistically you will never get it |

i went to B&H last summer when i was in NYC for vacation.
it's like disney world for people like us. and it was a complete zoo when i was in there, but i loved it.
my local camera shop was about the size of their "used" room. i exaggerate somewhat...but barely. :D

I still prefer Buydig.com. I have made 8 purchases from them in the last 18 months (cameras, photo printer, and garmin GPS) and I have NEVER had a problem with them. They always have the low price and ground shipping is free.
Before buying from anyone online you should check them out on //www.resellerratings.com
But if B&H is the disney world of camera stores, Samys Camera on Fairfax in Los Angeles is DisneyLAND! I love browsing there. |

I don't like Adorama, they resort to holding orders and calling to sell extra stuff on orders.
