My purchases (and expereinces)
Fuji 1400z - refurbed model bought on ebay. still have it, just fine.
Fuji S602z - bought from a friend. sold it on ebay. He had bought it as a refurb on ebay. No issues.
Various accessories - all bought on ebay, no issues.
Canon Rebel and 2 lenses - b&h, no problems.
Sigma 70-300 lens, new on ebay, no issues. (saved about $40 over b&h)
Metz 54 MZ4 and LS II, bought over net not on ebay (referred). Save $140, no issues.
a variety of other misc camera items, on ebay, no issues.
Flash cards i buy locally, cause with rebate there is nothing cheaper.
For a body you have choices (best buy, circuit city, etc as well as Ritz et al) or buy on line. Not as easy for lenses as local selection is non-existent. I save more by buying online and that lets me buy other stuff. Yesterday ordered a Sigma 18-50 2.8 for $420 via ebay (new) vs $500 at b&h. I have $80 now for something else...
As to local camera stores...If i had one worth a damn I might be inclined to support them. There are lots Ritz stores or one independent that is 1/2 scrapbooking. They have used canon stuff sometimes, lots of film bodies used or phoenix lenses (they rave about them. They do not do digital photography...'nuf said).
Online is the future, like it or not.

My old olympus point and shoot had image stabilization...it's not just Canon. |

My mistake. I thought you were still busy trying to flog your dRebel. Please please forgive my horrific oversight and mis-spelling of faster.

oh and it's not because canon couldn't afford black paint it's because they say the white coating allows the lens to work better in hotter climates. get it right next time, goodness.

Correction: Nikon has better WIDE angle glass. Telephoto Canon will kick its ass :) sorry to say but it's true. Much wider selection of pro lenses + image stabilization for just about any focal length above 70mm, including consumer lenses.

With canon's glass and the new XT, it over the d70 is a no-brainer, in all honesty. I don't just say that because I have a canon either -- I'm not a Nikon hater -- if Nikon was better, I'd say so. |
not that it will ever matter to me really, but nikon has the reputation for the better glass usually.
the only reason i bought the d70 over the 20d was cuz nikon made a digi fisheye and canon doesnt. d70 just felt better to me too.
its whatever feels more comfortable to you i'd say. dont get too caught up the in the gear...its you makin the pictures. if your gear has the manual controls etc u need then you're set either way. |

My first digital camera is the Nikon 5700 which at the time I bought it,I thought was more camera than I really needed in terms of functionality but I really wanted to get in to digital photography. I was also looking for a camera that had what was then a high megapixel count to get as close to film type photographs. A really good salesman convinced me (probably without too much effort) that this was the choice to make. Soon enough I got used to all the functions & I am very comfortable with this camera but I wanted to do things photographically that I couldnt achieve with a prosumer camera.
The logical choice for me was to move up to the D70 but for the same money as the D70 kit,no card included, I bought a 300D kit that included two lenses, a 256MB card & a camera bag. So for me it came down to value for money. Still I would of loved to have bought that D70 but I have no regrets & I'm having a lot of fun with the 300D.

Hi Again...
I have come to a decision:)
All of the cameras mentioned and commented on sound like great cameras, but for what I need/want right now, and my present (and probably future) budget, I am going with the Canon Rebel XT. I found out they sell them at Staples, and I have one about 40 min. from me, so I hope I get there to buy it today:)! Although the price is the full retail $999, they offer a two week return policy if not 100% satisfied with no restocking fee (circuit city, about 1 1/2 hours from me would take it back within 7 days but a 15% restocking fee (or $150 bucks!). Staples is also offering a two year Staples warranty plan (not sure exactly what is it called) for an additional $49 (which I feel is reasonable). So I am hoping to get there today. I know I could save money buying on the web or circuit city, but feel good about Staples so feel it will be worth the extra money. (my local camera shop did not offer an extended warranty or much support if something went wrong, so I figure they are charging the same as Staples so am going to Staples (I spend alot in this local shop on mats, frames, processing, and usually like to support the local mom and pop stores, but they have been really dissappointing on my potential camera purchase) :(
Anyway, sorry to go on and on but am very excited and hoping to get to the store today (before my spouse changes his mind!!! Probably shouldn't have told him about the two week return deal;)
Thanks again everyone - without your comments, opinions, and willingness to share your knowledge it would have taken me forever to decide! Hopefully I will be posting new pics in the next week!
Have a great day:)

See if you have a wolfcamera near you if you are considering the extended warranty. They offer an extended warranty that covers everything even if you drop the camera, get it wet, etc, etc. Staples warranty will not cover problems like damage, things that the customer had control over. Staples warranties will replace the manufactures warranty and add another year on to it so really you are only getting an additional year. just a thought.

Thanks, that is something to think about - I assumed it covered everything. bj

Quick update -
Going with Ritz Camera $999.00 - they have an extended warranty that covers everything (even dropping, etc). Pricey for an extended warranty but I think it will be worth it. (Circuit City doesn't cover everything either). On my way now:)
