Based upon the comments and suggestions I received, I tried to re-work my Silhouettes shot. Please give me your honest, constructive opinions on how I did. Remember - I am new to the editing of digital images so I know this is still not perfect.

the image lacks interest and visual appeal, and the edit job is not much different than the original. I think you need a more interesting subject for a good silluette.

theSaj: not sure your comment is honest constructive opinion

Simon: aside from your dilike of my subject - it was the best I could come up with last minute, what editing would you recommend? I increased the contrast and sharpened the moth, plus toned down the light behind the moth a tad.

All of you folks who gave me comments - sure would appreciate your input on this.

I think that your edit looks MUCH clearer and more appealing to the eye. The colors look more true and vibrant. I'm pretty new to this stuff too, and I understand sometimes you just have to work with what you've got :-) I would call your edit improved :-) :-)

If you want to, take some time this week to try and shoot some other silhouettes. I went out around sunset and found some things I could point my camera at while facing into the sun. Got fairly decent results.

Keep up the work on the editing, you'll find that it gets more intuitive the more you do it. Also, it seems like you have a good eye for not letting your shots get Overprocessed. so good job on that!

The second has more appeal color wise and is sharper. However, it is one of those images that is best put in the lessons learned folder and helps sharpen within you a critical eye that guides your last minute camera setup.

Linda,

It's prettyhard to judge your editing when the thumbs don't link to entry-size images. Certainly, based on the thumb, your PP has improved. More constructive than that I can't be without a larger image to examine.

For convenience, links to your full size images:

I think that the reworked image is a great improvement on the original in terms of sharpness at this size and colour vibrancy. However, you have lost some of the detail in the wing (veins shining through) that was interesting from a general standpoint (though perhaps less relevant for the purpose of the silhouette challenge). You might be able to keep the intense blacks and the detail by playing with the curves tool in PS.

This would also have made an excellent entry into the light challenge.

Thanks everyone for your helpful comments. I do not know why I could not get the links to show entry size pics. As for the veins no longer showing, I liked them myself, but received a comment that they took away from the moth being e true silhouette - so I decided to see how it would look following that person's thoughts. I really took all the comments I got and tried to apply all that was suggested to see what difference it would make. I like the re-worked much better, except for the missing veins.
