Yesterday, taterbug's computer monitor burnt up. He doesn't have money for a new one and I don't have money to give him for one either. He wanted everyone to know he won't be around much for a while and probably won't be able to edit/enter any shots either. He's really bummed about it and so am I cause I can't help him with the situation.

He's kinda proud and he didn't want me to do this, but I'm asking on his behalf if anyone has an extra monitor around they don't use anymore they may be able to sell cheap or even donate to the cause. Between the two of us we should be able to come up with shipping costs if someone can help...

Edit: I gotta go to work now, but will ask the wife to watch this thread through the evening and keep me updated...

Got a 17" monitor. I would be willing to ship to MI. Need to know how much it costs first. Maybe we can get other DPC'ers to cover shipping. It doesn't have a monitor cable though.

I have one that's currently in the queue to be matched with a recipient with the National Cristina Foundation. It's only 14", and 1024x768 resolution, but it works. I think it might be expensive to ship a monitor though.

If he or someone wants to pay for shipping, and Cristina foundation does not find a match, then he's welocme to the 14".

I got monitor cables around somewhere here. That wouldn't be a problem. Thank you so much for your considerate offer. I'll call him when I get a chance and let him know! :-)

I will weigh it and get some photos of it uploaded tonight when I get home and we can go from there.

I also have a big old but working 17" that I'd be happy to send him.
If you hit a snag let me know. I'm in AZ and it weighs a lot but he can sure have it.

You guys are so awesome!!!!!

I expect we'll be seeing Taterbug in his challenges just like always! I love happy endings like this! Let me know if the shipping ends up being sky high. I'll be happy to contribute to the shipping fund, okay??

Hey Rex....

Ship it "Media Mail" via the post office. When they ask what's in it...tell them "digital photographs"

I know I'm late to the discussion, but I have a KDS 17" monitor that I will donate to the cause and put $15 towards shipping.

since all DPC members are soo willing to help.. my camera just went in for a repair, and I really need a 1Ds Mark II, there must be someone that has one just laying around that wants to be soo helpful and give it to me :)

This may seem a little low-brow (not to mention a tad late), but every time I go to my local dump, err, sanitary landfill with a major recycling wing, there is a huge heap of monitors stashed away in the "electroniky" part of the recycling area.

Everyone is being very generous! But before doling out for shipping, it's probably been mentioned that there are quite a few "free stuff" websites and ads in local papers. I'm in Calgary so I can only go by what's in my area, but there are always ads for people giving away monitors. And shipping on a monitor would be astronomical (esp. an older model made from solid rock :-)..poor guy would no doubt get better use out of the cold hard cash.

I have a monitor too. Not sure of the size, may be 15" or even 17" I live in KY. But I agree, he may be able to look in the area and find something closer.

Yes, this is definitely true at our landfill, (and also stashed in the attendants building!) They put all kinds of stuff in there!

Sorry I am such a putz. Thought it was still here. I gave it to my aunt a few weeks ago. If anybody else wants to step up to the plate with a monitor then I will help pay for shiping if needed.

Being someone who has repaired hundreds and hundreds of monitors, USUALLY when a monitor 'smokes' it is only a 2.00 capacitor in the Horizontal drive/high voltage circuit loop. That is of course assuming the CRT itself didn't smoke.

Any local technical types that can look at it for you?

I have a 15" and I live in MI, so shipping wouldn't exactly be a problem.

Freecycle is a great way to get rid and find stuff for free in your local communities... might save on shipping charges, which can be costly for something like a monitor...

Just wanted to mention it!
