I'm just after a bit of advice - my wife's uncle is offering me a Nikon D100 for £500 as he's upgrading I think. I've not had chance to look the camera up (I'll be checking the Steve's Digicams site when I get chance), so just wanted some general opinions of the camera, and what it's worth now.

Photography is only a fairly new hobby to me, so I'm not sure I want to part with so much money... I mainly like taking landscape shots, especially in the Lake District, but also want to be able to take good family snaps etc. I really like my Z3 at the moment, but do get frustrated with some of its shortcomings.

Anyway, let me know what you think:
- is £500 a good deal for a D100?
- should I wait and get a year or two more's experience of photography before going for an SLR?
- would the D100 be too much of a step up (i.e. are there SLR's that would be better for a newbie photographer)

Thanks in advance for any advice!
