I've had the idea to start a small "party photographer" business. Basically, I would go to a child's birthday party and take pictures for the mom because she's normally too busy getting everything ready and watching all the kids. However, I have a few questions that you might have good ideas for:

What should I charge for prints / CDs?
Should there be a base fee for actually being at the party?
Does my age make a difference in pricing? (I'm 15.)
How should I advertise?

Thanks!

Let me divide my post in two parts, since you divided your question also.

First, why "party photographer"? It's a bit unprofessional designation for professional (yes if you charge they suppose youre proffessional and expect sutch qualaty) purpose. Why only party and not "celebration"? In celebration you can englobe everything from weddings to birthday partys.

I've just did yesterday my first pay job has a photographer. I've get toguether with a friend and decided to start a business (part-time for know) in the area of image (most photography). We are presenting very low prices for the qualaty that we think we have. But it has to be this way because we didn't want to spend a lot in publicity. So we do't have a full agenda but we didn't spend all our money advertising. Hope our best qualaty will bring us some very good clients next year, because this year clients are being really happy and advertising for us.

Make some packages, including hours of work and prints and other extras like albums and so. Plane in advance before you get face to face with potential clients.

But yes, I think your age will be a problem. Not because I don't think you can deliver qualaty work, but because the credebility and experience will be very reduced "in your face" if youi knoe what I mean.

Hi Brad,

Your age will certainly be a issue, what you need to do (in my opinion) is let your work speak for you, work on a style and stick with it, let people get impressed by your work on it's own merits then they will be happy to ask you to do paid projects.

I'd suggest looking at the work of Joey Lawrence, he is a true artist and has created a style for himself, and most importantly, he's proven that both age and equipment are no excuse.

Hope this helps
