I have to thank all of the commenters on this image, you all picked up on the rawness of the emotion behind it, which is worth more to me than the votes.

I live in an ex-mining community in Yorkshire, and my village no longer has a mine, or 'Pit' as we know them. The mining communities were smashed back in the 1980's by the Conservative Government under Margaret Thatcher.

I had to make a special visit to the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield in order to take this photograph. I had exactly this image in my mind before I went, but what I hadn't realised was how much emotion it would also bring out during the execution. I'm really glad that this managed to show through into the final product.

Once again thank you all for the fantastic comments.

p.s. - The museum have offered to run the image as a postcard in the gift shop!

I know I expressed my thoughts during the challenge...this is an outstanding shot, certainly worthy of a ribbon, but more importantly a picture that resonates. This shot will stick with me..brilliant indeed!

That's fantastic? Will they include credit to you on the back?

That was indeed a great shot... and for me it brought back memories of the days that I worked in the nickel mines in Sudbury, Ontario. I still have the helmet and the lamp (torch).

Wonderful job,,,,congratulations on your success ... and thanks for the memories.
