I was stopped by the train so I took out my camera and took this candid shot of the conductor. Luck was on my side, he look my way as I pressed the shutter. What do you think of this as a 'candid' shot?

I like some things about the shot, Scott, but I'd probably vote it a "6" in a candid challenge; not bad, not stellar. As always, this is just my take, and who am I, right? But you asked for input.

I think it's well exposed. The only possible blown highlight that I see is the small area at bottom right. The color is also good; like the blue. Where it lacks, I think, is in the size and positioning of the subject conductor. He is centered, relatively small, and most importantly seems hemmed in because he is face to face with the edge of the window opening. I think this might work better with a tighter crop, maybe a horizontal flip so that he is looking right, and framed to be less centered.

Ok, that's it for my opinion. I see that you're still using the 70-200 at ISO 100, and the shot looks plenty sharp a 1/250. Are you still bumping up to ISO 400 when the light gets dimmer? Still unhappy with the lens, or have you worked that blur problem out? That's my hope, especially since I was among those that suggested it.

Hope you're doing well. And hey, any chance you could make it up to the July get together in DC? All it would cost you is gas (not inconsiderable!) and food while on the road, since you and your family would be welcome to stay here. Give it some thought.

Raymond thanks for your critique. I find it very helpful as I have a lot of pay on this image. I was undecided on the crop. One side of my brain was saying crop so more of the train is in frame while the other side of my brain was saying crop down to the window, so I compromised. I will try some of your suggestions. As far as the lens, yes I am getting better with it I think. I mostly shoot in ISO 100 when lighting is good but bump up to 200 and 400 when needed and it has helped tremendously. In this picture as you can see you can almost read the gauges behind the conductor and the train was going about 15 to 20 mph. Slow but enough speed that it could of caused motion blur. Your advice about ISO is one of the best tips I have received in a long time.
Thanks,
Scott.

Not only did he look your way but you got a smile too. I'd make the shot a little bit sharper, and try to lighten up the shaded side of his face some to get detail there. Very good capture.
