I'm going on vacation and I'm looking for portable hard drive with CF reader. I just need to copy my 2g card every day or two. I don't need to view pictures from the hard drive. I just need to free up space on the card.
Does anybody have one those thing? Are they good/bad slow/fast?
Any recomendations on which one to buy?
So far I'm leaning to this one:

Looks good but you pay more for having color screen. Screen also makes it bigger.
Thanks

That is one thing that is going on my Xmas wish list. Let us know which one you get and tell us how it performs. |

Same here...I've been looking at the different kinds for about a year and was waiting for the prices to come down....something to bring along in the car without having to bring my laptop. |

You can get a 20Gb Flashtrax for $232. Yes, it's more expensive than a drive without a color screen, but it's also more versatile. Reviewing images on a 3.5" screen is a lot easier than on the camera's small LCD, and it'll also play MP3 files and generate slide shows. |

I've got the iPod photo with the card reader and it works great, but I use it first for the MP3 and second for photos. However I did get a glich and had to restore the iPod (and erase any photo's I was lucky and I didn't have any on the iPod.) Don't forget about murphy and his dislike for technology.
If I was geting a photo only storage option, I would choose a CD burner. Simpler operation (no O/S to get messed up), can verify the CD's that you make on any computer you find. Unlimited capacity and about the same price as a 20GB HD model. Also, you can make multi copies (mail some home? leave with family, or client, etc.) Also you have a permenant copy (if you need DPC to verify your entry). Also if you do have a problem, it will only be with one CD not your entire vacation! [tip: if you do go the CD route, pre-number you CD's at home so you don't get mixed up in the field.] |

If this is for storage over a long trip, make sure you check the reviews for battery life. A lot of these devices run dry after just a few transfers, and it doesn't help you if you can store 40GB, but it goes dead after you transfer 6gb. I can't stand the thought of carrying a spool of CDs with me, personally, but I'm much more likely to be carrying everything I own, which creates certain weight and bulk constraints that you might not have. |

This is what I bought last year: Xs Drive II. I paid about 200 USD for 20 gigabytes.
Here are sample prices from Yahoo: Yahoo Link
Be careful!!! with this one...note that the unit comes without a hard drive for under $80. (Also note that I could buy 3 times the memory today for what I paid last year!!!!) Oh well, I needed what I needed when I needed it....
If you have questions about it, feel free to PM me.

If you can get over its price, the Epson P-2000 is the best portable hard-drive solution, bar-none. It does have a full color screen and can preview raw files, though.
For those of you who use iPod Photo, isn't it really slow and the battery does't last long?

The Flashtrax 30gb is what I have and it's awesome. I love it and I wouldn't give it up for anything. It's more expensive, but the security of seeing my files on it and previewing them to ensure they are there - perfect.

The CompactDrive PD7X looks like the thing to get these days. The "Tripper Next" is also attractive. |

I use a kanguru x-media hard drive that takes most card types and has no display but now they have some that burn right to a cd that I would love to own. //www.kanguru.com/cardreaders.html
