For the challenge of Lighting, are we intended to display anything specific? I began my quest for ideas with confidence that I knew what I could do, but as I continued my thought proccess, the boundaries of qualification dissolved into confusion. My confusion comes from the fact that every photograph must contain some sort of lighting, so my question is, what would qualify for this category and what would be considered off the subject? I suppose I could have asked my question some where else, but I figured that here I would receive an answer depicting the kind of picture I can take that would fit in. Thanks to everyone! |

My take is that the first impression of the image has to be the use of light, not the colour, not the texture, not anything else but the light. The lighting can be natural or otherwise.
Easier said than done.

ask a question, receive a million answers.
I doubt you'll be satisfied by the end of this thread.. it'll devolve into the usual "blah blah blah" about how 50 different people find 50 different interpretations on what the challenge and the description means..
In the end, you'll just have to submit what you honestly think, for yourself, is the strongest image for the challenge that you've taken during the week. Anything else is just pure conjecture that may or may not help your score.

Does the light sources have to be visual?
Or taking a photo of a portrait with light only would qualify?

Alright, well my photo contains light in it, and it's pretty evident, so I think I should be okay! Thanks for the replies! |

I submitted to this challenge, but I am not sure what is the key factor in my photo, the subject or the lighting ? But well I really like the way it came out... |

I think the point here, is that the challenge theme is pretty broad, if I could make a prediction, I'd suggest that the type of pictures that'll do well in this challenge are pretty simply the ones that normally get comments like 'love the lighting.' What I'm getting at, is that so long as you've used light effectively, such that it is a major part of the photo's impact, I'd say you meet this challenge.
That doesn't mean you have to show the light source, or photograph a lightbulb or anything of the sort! |

Originally posted by "challenge rules": Lighting is arguably the most important element in photography. Without light, you can't capture an image. Use lighting in a creative fashion this week so that the lighting itself is a key factor in your composition. |
I understand this in the way that you can take a picture of anything, but the lighting is the key element, so if you change the lighting the picture wouldn't be worth taking, the lighting should be unique for that shot and really make the shot worth taking. you could even take a picture of a spill on your breakfast table, something you would normally not do, but just at the right moment, the crystal statue in the kitchen window reflects a prism on to the spill and makes it look like a rainbow.. that makes it worth shooting.
sounds stupid.. but it's my understanding of the rules :) |
