Am I correct in understanding that if a voter feels a photo does not meet challenge rules he/she can request a DQ but should vote on the photo's merit and leave the final determination up to the administrator? That is my understanding as I vote.

this is exactly correct
just because a DQ has been requested does not mean it's automatic. it initiates a behind-the-scenes process to look into it :).

There is a photo I question in the Flora Challenge but instead of requesting it be DQ I left a comment asking to know how something was done. I did vote it a 5 simply cause it is very eye appealling but because of what I noticed it was very distracting and I couldn't have given it a 7 or 8 cause of the distraction in the photo. If the photographer replys to my comment and answers my question I may even be able to go back and look at it and understand it better and give it a higher score.

Yeah, there is a photo that looks questionable, but now it has an "administrative note". Maybe that's the one you were questioning?

The one I was questioning I got a reply about and an explaination of how it was acheived. I went back in and took another look at it and gave it a 10 simply cause I realize there was a lot of work that went into the photo, and it really is very good.

I just went and looked yes that is the one I questioned using a comment on it. I got a detailed explaination on how it was done.

This is exactly why you should vote ALL photos AS IF LEGAL, even if you want to request a DQ.

Actually my first vote on it lower cause I admit I just didn't understand how it was done, but after learning how it was done and taking a second look at the photo I felt it deserve a much higher score.

But if it's so good that you can't even figure out how it was done, why wouldn't it get your highest vote to start with?

Because my first impression of the photo was that it was something other than what it really was I misunderstood it. Check your mail Paul.

I've been wondering for some time, is there a ´´deadline`` for requesting a DQ on a challenge entry? I requested a DQ a while ago on a photo I was sure I had seen somewhere before. To the best of my knowledge the photo was never verified (at least it never showed the ´´This submission has been verified by the admin`` message).

In the end it didn't make a huge difference to the challenge, since the photo didn't place, but I was still slightly disappointed that the request never received attention.

These admin notes are normally only put on when there appears to be illegal editing which may cause people to question if the photo is withing the rules.

All requests get looked into, but if we are not provided with links to proof that an image is not within deadlines there is not much we can do.

The deadline for requesting DQ is one week after the challenge ends (with the exception of any placing photos, which can be DQd at any time.) However after the challenge ends the DQ requests must be made via email directly to an administrator.

I always believed that the photo is verified by requesting the original be submitted for EXIF data verification. How else could you verify the authenticity of any image?
