I have a 77mm B+W UV filter whose threads seem to permanently grab anything I screw in, particularly, the Cokin adapter ring I sometimes put in front of it.

I've read this is something particular to B+W's metal construction (and perhaps together with the Cokin adapter). Does anyone know a workaround (besides taking off the UV anytime I need to use the Cokin. (That doesn't help either, because as I recall the cokin adapter also can be hard to take off the lens too (and while struggling with it, since it's open, I invariably fingerprint the lens.)

A little oil on the threads perhaps? If so, what kind of oil would be safe to use.

I do have this issue occasionally with my B+W 77mm c-pol. I was not aware that it was common. It hasn't been a big issue for me, I don't usually stack anything in front of it.
I wouldnt't use any lubricant that remains liquid (e.g. oils) since they will inevitablye creep out onto the filter... ICK! You might try a "dry lubricant" (not an oxymoron!). They are based on things like teflon or molybdenum disulfide or graphite. Personally, I'd choose a teflon-based lube first, because it's benign and not black. Both MoS2 and graphite are black powders. The moly compounds would be preferrable to the graphite if you have to choose between them. I'd never use graphite, the particles cna be large, and they are electrically conductive. Not good for electronics.

Use some wax from an old birthday candle or any candle for that matter, and just run it around the threads once real quick.

That's an interesting idea! Have you tried this or know anyone who has?

I tried a bar of soap, very lightly and it worked fine.

I use a little bit of candle wax on filter threads and it works well. Just donĂ¢€™t use a lot.
