Drill Rig

The camera in your hands wouldn't exist without various metals mined from the earth. In hommage to the intrepid exploration geologists who find these deposits, take a photo of a working drill rig and the heroic geologists running it in order to find the deposits that go into your camera.

Looks like I'll be spending next week down in Utah for meetings and hopefully I'll have the time to tour the site, where we have a couple of rigs running. So a perfect time for this challenge would be next week. OK, SC, let's help Slippy get that Blue Ribbon!

:-D

HOw many people would have access to photographing a drill rig? I don't think many. I wouldn't even know where to find one where I live (NY). I may have to travel quite far to find one. Besides, how many of these drilling companies would allow access to their drilling sites? None, I would think.

drilling companys around here dont mind going on the sites as long as u dont mess with the equipment and theres security guards around to make sure...if u could find a main entrance and ask for permission to photograph and give the reason why they will give u permission and possiably want to purchase prints.

edit to add: as long as the rig isnt running at the time usually the guards will let ya...but if u want to photograph while running u would have to get permission from the corporate office i would think

Coolio. Hopefully I'll have some to post up as well.

Just so everyone knows how to spot one, a heroic geologist looks something like this:

That's one huge coal-scoop, or maybe oil-sand scoop. The last time I saw something like that I was in a helicopter on my way to a project in Northern Alberta. I would fly over the oil sands every day on my way to pluck samples from streams up to the north while the helicopter pilot hovered overhead. Very exciting work, especially when the pilot whacked tree branches with his blades to set me down.
