I've seen in some sites like Trek Earth, that when you upload a picture it automatically updates the shutter speed, aperture, camera, date, etc. Taking all this information from the Exif Data. I'd like to see this here at DPC, instead of the manual process being used right now, to make the uploading process easier.

That would certainly make it easier but I'm afraid we'd find that most of the images uploaded here have lost the exif data somewhere in the editing process. I really like seeing the exposure info with images, especially since this is supposed to be a teaching/learning site as well as a competition and disply site. Perhaps a more feasible solution would be to modify the uploading page to make entering the exposure info mandatory. It could be coded so that it would not upload if you left those blanks empty, just as it does now for challenge entries if you don't check the boxes saying that you've read the rules, etc. I'm sure some people would complain about the extra work but they will get used to it in time. It only takes 30 seconds at most to check your original file and then fill in about a dozen digits in three blanks. Not that much of a burden, people just need to be prodded to get into the habit of doing it.

I agree with you... maybe leaving it as a choice in the personal preferences?

Why extra work? You just have to click on a checkbox, and the script imports the exif data automatically. It takes one second, not 30. Or am I missing something here?

It makes sense that if the Exif Data is present in the picture, the site automatically takes it from there, don't you think?
I did like that in the upload process on Trek Earth.

Most challenge entries don't have EXIF info when they're submitted. When you "Save for Web" in Photoshop, the EXIF data is stripped out.

Wouldn't including exif data in all file uploads increase the file size? This would decrease your amount of portfolio space and increase server processing overhead (people already complain that DPC is slow).

I for one don't want to type in extra data for file uploads either. This data really isn't that helpful to anyone looking at your portfolio images anyway - is it? Adding photographer comments would help probably more, but that requires extra time as well.

That´s true....
That's why I don't use that Photoshop feature... I prefer resizing to 640x480 (or 480x640) and saving that with a different name.
The only post processing program I use that strips away the Exif Data is Neat Image.

I think it helps to analyze the picture. If people expect you to spend a few moments to look at their shot, and maybe a minute or two to type a constructive comment, they should be willing to spend a few moments entering the exposure data into the blanks provided.

Thanks! I didn't see it.
