I have some links represented by images in my sig and in my bio, but the links seem to be broken often, i.e., not have the images associated properly. The images are hosted on PBase, and I'm wondering if it's a PBase issue or a DPChallenge issue.

Also, some old versions seem to show up randomly as though they've been cached in weird places. I've tried clearing my local cache and reloading, but the problem persists.

Right now, I can see the first icon (my 2005 PaD mosaic) is an old version of the file (it's been updated with text for several days)

And, now it's the full icon with 2005 PaD in it.

Also, I love my Jedi user icon!!

i dont think pbase likes people linking images because it takes up extra bandwidth or something.

Hmmm. I'll check with them too then. I'm a paid-up user, and their help section gives instructions on how to direct link images when you're a paid member.

Thanks, though. =]

It is probably a combination of excessive bandwidth demand and server overload on either or both ends. Remember when you put a photo in your signature, it has to get served up for every post you've made in any forum someone's looking at. If 20 users are perusing a popular forum to which you've made five posts, your signature has to be served up 100 times simultaneously, and that's not counting someone reading another thread to which you've posted.

I strongly suggest just removing any linked images from your signature -- you can replace them with text links if you want -- and limit the signature to one or two lines of text.

Perhaps you can do as I do; when I do post my signature, I do so for the first posting I make to the thread, and turn it off for subsequent posts.

Thanks, GeneralE! I didn't think of the cumulative effect of all those sigs out there... I'll shrink the files and maybe reduce the icon count as well. Is PBase really that stingy? I mean, the .jpgs for those icons are only a few KB each.

The more I think about it, the issue seems related to DPC. The links aren't just showing broken image boxes, they're showing the url for the image used for the link to a different url. Could the issue be related to the way DPC serves urls? like if the site doesn't see the images as working it passes the url to the image instead?
