How about that one I just got for my silhouettes 2 pic:
"a strong image, but looks like you've altered it too much - the black is just too black"
huh? a silhouette is supposed to be black, no? Anyway I didn't change the levels or alter the (black) silhouette... That was given with a 4 by the way (I know coz I've been monitoring this one closely) and it was on 6.6 before
Anybody else got strange comments?

No. But I plan to leave several that say, "Your subject is almost completely devoid of features and rather lacking in detail."

(Nothing in the challenge = no comments received.)

edit: Forgot the ;-)

That's too funny!!! My silhouette entry is just longing for this kind of comment exactly!! LOL

Tazza - I wouldn't give it too much of importance. some don't give it much of a thought and make mistakes.
I did that on the parts challenge real bad, when I assumed some photos were cropped to get their part.

I leave comments later a lot of times, long after scoring the images. I am not sure, but I don't think you can always reliably tell that the score and comment were really given by the same person. That kind of spooks me about giving comments.

OK, fair enough it could have been a coincidence, it's just that voting have been slow today on this challenge and I get a comment and a vote in a short space of time. Anyway, I don't mind really, it's all for fun! ;-)

In the Minimalism challenge, I recieved the comment "Needs more". I would of thought being a minimalism challenge, the comment should of been "needs less". :)

In Free Study VIII, I got the one word comment "Wierd" but my all time favourite comment came in the Vanishing Point challenge "Please keep em coming. Since I'm stuck here in the f'ing heartland of America, I dont get to see places like this very ofter. Just trailer courts and large women wearing tight disney clothing. Yes,. God hates me."

This is pure genius! Now I got to go and check who left that comment

I had to know also - it was someone from Peoria, IL.

Edit to add: The only reason I opened this thread is cuz I thought for sure it was talking about me. ;-)

Comments can and will always be a source of head scratching.

Imagine you had a silhouette shot and someone commented: "Not enough detail in the shadows". (Huh?)
A shot that finished at a 6.XX had this one: "Missing the wow factor for me." (Didn't know it was a challenged pre-requisite..)

It's all OK though, because when the power button turned off, it all goes away.

I got a comment that my title didn't fit the image..so they scored me low! I thought this was about the photograph...not the title. Maybe I'm wrong and need to spend more time working on my title than my composition.

I got this comment " Although it's a nice exposure, its a boring picture. Severe lack of imagination and freshness. "
for my entry

Thanks for the reassurance! I hate to get slammed by someone who takes it very seriously and then thinks I gave a score I didn't. In the end, none of it is all that important! Thanks again.

My husband (Jackson) had this one on his picture in the Road Sign Challenge:

The sign detracts from the picture, but would be a great tourist shot to show you'd been there

We both had such a good laugh over it! One would expect to find a sign in a challenge about Road Signs. Just goes to show why sometimes you get such low votes on a picture that meets the challenge - some of the voters haven't even read the description before they start voting!

There is now a gazillion threads that talk about the title - some think it important, some don't. For me - if it's particularly good, you might get a bump and vice versa.

I don't think we should be getting too specific about publicly criticizing individuals comments. People are entitled to their opinions and as long as they don't personally attack you, the photographer, most anything should be acceptable, IMO, in my opinion, IMHO, my two cents, but that's just what I think. :)

There is so much talk on DPC of the elusive "wow factor" and it making the difference between a good shot and a great shot, and it being a very personal part of the evaluation, I would have thought this one to be a decent comment. What bothered you about it, Brad? I didn't make the comment, but I could see myself saying something meaning essentially that same thing.

I agree with you Kylie, in 99% of challenges, "wow factor" is definitely a prerequisite for a ribbon! I've got an inkling Brad knows about that too ;)

You neglected to mention that the viewer/voter had viewed your image 9,427 times. Any lack of imagination or freshness would have to be on the part of the person leaving that comment.

(Sentcha' a PM.)

Moody shots are and should be subtle or emotive, not wow.
At least not in my opinion.
Guess wow means different things to different people.

I looked at his other comments and found that he has seen other shots 10,000 times as well and he finds most of the shots on dpchallenge 'boring'.

No argument at all here. Just how we each use words. I guess that for me I do think "wow" sometimes when someone just hits me in the guts with a "moody" shot or emotive. It is always a wow for me when a person through their photography reaches something authentic or deep in me. But I understand better where your coming from now. I think you meant that it wasn't supposed to be a "slick and glossy" type "wow".

That's hilarious on so many levels... stunning photo by the way. Just wish there was a little more detail in the shadows. (kidding, of course(not kidding about the stunning part))

Maybe the individual who said that needs to buy a camera. I'd give my eye teeth (well, maybe) for an image that good. But I don't go up there after dark. (Eeek)
