As a diver myself, I was just curious to see if there were any other scuba divers around here and any underwater photographs. I've searched the galleries but found none. So, if you have underwater pics, share them...

Here's the only dpc underwater picture I could think off the top of my head.

I would expect we have at least a few more.

Out of curiosity, does the camera have to be underwater for it to be considered an underwater pic? (I'm thinking of pictures taken, say, at an aquarium, of fish/sharks/whatever where the subject is underwater but the camera is not.)
I've always kinda wondered this...

I would say the camera has to be underwater but that is my opinion. I really need to buy a underwater housing and try it.

xonkas,

My wife and I are both certified rescue divers and have been diving some nine years - maainly in the Caribbian. I would always dive with my camera connected to my gear. (Since the arrival of our 5 grand kids we haven't been diving as much as we used to.) My best pictures were taken while diving the Florida keys. It was bath tub diving . . . very warm and a maximum depth of 40 feet. But between fourty and fifty feet is where most of the beautiful fish are. I used an underwater camera with a single flash. The results of my images are fair to middlen with only one or two exceptional shots (one of them taken during a night dive). I would share them with you but the were all in print or slide format. I have converted some of them to digital via scanning or a reproduction tube (lens). But I don't fell they tranaslate well.

Yes, saracat, the camera must be an underwater camera or housed in an underwater housing that protects the camer not only from moisture but water pressure. The deeper you go, the more secure the housing has to be. The deeeper you go, the more artificial lighting you need. Underwater photography is very challenging. I have been toying with the idea of buying a housing for my Cannon D10. Have to convice my wife I need one!

I was very lucky to meet the ultimate treaure diver, Mel Fisher as well as the record holder for depth, Dr. Sylvia Earley. We have a picture of my wife with Mel Fisher. She is holding a 1400 gold ingot and wrapped around her neck is an 8K wedding necklace that Mel recovered off the coast of Florida from the sunken Spanish ship Atocha..

Dusting off some old (scanned from film) pics from a vacation to Hawaii some 6 years ago. My wife and I spent several glorius days scuba diving. This is just one scene where I'm climbing into a old sea plane that went down back in 1949.

You'd have to buy an underwater housing specifically for your digital camera and they're not cheap at all...

Great photos here. Hope to see more.
As all of mine are in print format, I'll scan some and post them afterwards.
