Let's keep things in perspective. Jimmy Dean (OP) is a newbie here (04/28/05). IMO, he was not angry or rude, nor did he b*tch.
I agree with nfessel that you should be proud you won the ribbon and I'm sure everyone appreciates your honesty about how you would've scored it.

Funny how we all see things differently. I for one did not view his comments as a "put down" of DPC voters at all.

The fairness behind DPC voting is what I believe in. Okay, you do have your fringe voters in both directions (note: the mysterious "10" voter who appears at the beginning of many challenges). But the voting is a popular, uncoerced perspective, and from photography enthusiasts at that. Cash prizes: Yes please. Respect from peers: Just as quickly, yes. Learning from others: Again, undeniable.
The unrestrained result of voting and the cumulation of numerical statements of value is as close to honesty in the digital world as we can assume.
I admit I spend extra time observing and learning from ribbon winners because they have earned that respect. With talent and validation from DPC peers, they earn that respect.

Apparently he is entered in a pending challenge. He has "received" seven comments.
Bottom line: 180 people voted. This was third.
Congrats!

A great photograph should be judged great by how long one can stare at it in awe. I am still looking at this photograph in awe. I only looked at the bird shot briefly twice. |
Not to belittle anyone else's placing (ya gets what ya gets), but I have to agree that this photo is a piece of art. I guessed the maker at first glance. The mark of a true artist is the ability to sign your work without using your name. Truely exceptional. |

please dont take what I said the wrong way. THe voters voted and I thank then for that, but again if money were at stake I never would have entered it. I know when my photos are worth submitting or not and I felt this one was decent, but not GREAT. Again thanks to the voters!!!
I was in West Texas in Ft. Davis at the Prude Ranch (some 650 miles from my home) I did NOT know about the "outside looking in" challenge when I took this photo, it just happend to "fit the challenge".
While out in Ft. Davis I saw some wood peckers and followed them for a few days then took about 50 shots of this pair. This particular shot was actually pretty hard to get. Very over cast skies, I have to stand on a rock with my mono pod fully extended. I had to deal with the wind blowing branches in the way and such. I dont have any other out takes to share of this particular bird/tree, but on this page you will see some of my other shots taken during my trip.

I agree, but like Jean-Jacques needs any more ribbons. :-P

Interesting.
While I agree that the image 'Up Looking Down' is far more artistic in its feel, DPC is all about the challenge and the 3rd place shot is far more on the money with the challenge than the alternatively posed shot.
Forget about 'high art photography' for only a moment and think about a school full of children. This image would sell to them a lot more quickly with or without the challenge precepts. It would make an excellent image for any number of poster concepts or for a science text book and really does show off a number of photographic skills and techniques.
The questions will always rage on about how a certain image made it to a certain level of appreciation, but when we stop looking through a 400mm lens and use the fish-eye, that different perspective will almost always produce some understanding of the bigger picture.
