I think Canon has a larger and better choice of digital items.

We have a Nikon D70 and a Canon 20D.
I like the interface of the Nikon much better - especially the ease of access to that on switch.
I like the availability (and consequent keen prices) of a larger choice of lenses for the Canon.
Both are great cameras, similar in quality (20D has higher resolution but not by a massive factor) and are similar in handling.

I echo the recommendation to go to a store where you can feel both cameras in your hand... in the past we have often found ourselves ruling out what we thought would be the number one contender because it just feels wrong in our hands...

If that doesn't rule one or other out, opt for the one that strikes you as a better brand to invest in long term (in terms of lenses and peripherals) or the one that offers a significant cost advantage if that question doesn't help either.

Both are great cameras. You should also consider the upcoming D50 and the D70s, which will replace the D70. Find the camera that has the features you want for the price you are willing to pay and see how they feel in the store before buying them. Lenses are very similar in my opinion.

I hear this a lot from people who use both Nikon and Canon, actually. There are also a small number of people in that camp who also claim that the Nikon glass is slightly better, though I'm not sure exactly how much difference there really is. The Canon sensors are definitely better, so if you do much low-light or high-speed work, consider that.

My major complaint against starting with Nikon at this stage is that as a company they appear to be moving towards making money by restricting access to proprietary formats; witness their decision to encrypt the white balance data in their raw files so that you can't open them directly in Photoshop, for instance. That kind of attitude really, really chaps my hide, and until they change their stance, I'm recommending against going with Nikon over Canon. My philosophy is that it's *MY* pictures and *MY* raw data, damnit, and you had better well make it easy for me to manipulate them with whatever software I choose.
