...of this computer?

I'm thinking of using a good chunk of my savings on it next month.

It's an Apple. Please reconsider.

Thank you.

Heh. I've defended PC's all my life against the likes of Macintosh. I'm extremely familiar with Windows-based machines. But since then, I've gotten really tired of them, and it just seems like Macs are made better. I've never owned a Mac, but poking around their website makes them look reeeeal pretty.

Didn't mean to rekindle the Mac/PC bonfire here, though. Anybody have any experience with a computer like this? Or a substantial reason why I shouldn't get it?

Macs are easier to use and troubleshoot than PCs. I haven't been happy editing photos on the LCD screens, but I haven't checked these newer ones. It also somewhat depends what investment you have in software and peripherals. If you want to do any video or sound that's the machine of choice for now too...BTW -- I'm on a PC right now...

Thanks for your opinion, this is a pretty big investment, and I'd like to be confident in it.

That's the one I want!! Mmmmmm...SUPERDRIVE!
I have been running on an 600mhz iBook for the last 2 years. And have had no problems. This LCD screen (12") is 2 years old and it has great color, etc. and quality. They say they have improved on that on those new Mactops, so I can imagine it is superb. Most of the problems people have with LCD's are they do not calibrate them. Very important!
You have probably heard it before, but MOST people involved in the imaging biz, work on Macs.
You NEED to have a laptop? That is the one I would choose. If not, I would go with this //www.apple.com/imac/ (this is what I am looking at next), or if you want it to be a bit more expandable, that PowerMac G4 is superb. //www.apple.com/powermac/
I have been on Apple since 1982, with an Apple IIe, and just have never been satisfied with the quantity, not quality attitude of PC's (well the companies).

If you want the best, it is the 'only' choice, no contest. Apple's LCD's are superb for image processing, as well, taking full advantage of the Quartz engine (Quartz Extreme) build into OS X. Apart from the extraordinary stability and elegance of the OS, software compatibility (OS X v. 10.2.5 at point of writing) is amazing, as is the sheer simplicity of navigation, built in PDF support, ease of print setup and printing, just to mention basics. My friend, who has last year's powerbook can't live without the superdrive anymore (writing to DVD). This is something you may wish to include.

Dream machine. Go get it.

Your savings will be WELL spent!! I have the same machine, 15in. with the dvd burner, I can make movies and edit photos with EASE. My system doesn't crash --EVER!! The programs are all integrated, (imovie, iphoto, itunes and idvd so you can add music to your slide show in same window) sophisticated, and did I mention EASY to use. I have 3 computers pc's and macs, pcs are awful (sorry all you windows users). The bit of money you save up front you will spend later on tech support, and wasted time rebooting and figuring out how it works. The graphics on the powerbook are awesome, I too have upgraded from the ibook and have been very happy with the capabilities of the G4. I do not consider mysyelf to be computer guru, yet I can navigate all the mac programs with EASE. The first day with new video camera I had I movie figured out, could edit, add great effects, and add a soundtrack all with point and click simplicity, yet the finished project could be from hollywood. The mobility especially for taking photos and movies on holidays is wonderful. I will never buy an another pc again. You will not be disappointed with a mac--guarenteed!!! How can one be unhappy with an EASY TO USE, COMPATABLE, CRASHLESS computer??? Any more specific questions feel free to ask.

dacrazyrn, zeuszen, ellamay -

Thanks a lot, this is exactly the positive reinforcement I was hoping for (though, of course, I would want to hear any complaints too). It certainly does qualify, for me, as a "dream machine." I think PCs are good for many things, and don't want to demonize them, but I'm beginning to believe that an Apple is a step up. Though the price is a bit of a dissuasion, I can't build a better machine on Dell.com for any less (and not for considerably more, either) so the G4 is really the best option in that area, as well.

"Crashless" is also one heck of a pro. I was talking to a tech support guy about my new printer and mentioned that I was planning to buy a Mac (while we were waiting for a printout) and he said, after applauding the choice, that "If the Mac OS crashes, then there's something loose in the computer, because there absolutely no software conflicts to speak of."

And there's just something sexy about that "Superdrive."

More importantly, when you're backing up gobs of photo and video data, you really need the DVD-R and the 4gb capacity...blank DVD disks should soon be almost as cheap as CD-Rs.

I just ordered this system:

PowerBook 1GHz (17" TFT)
60 GB ATA drive
SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW)
AirPort Extreme Card (standard)
1 GB DDR SDRAM - 2 DIMMs
Fiber-optic Backlit Keyboard (standard)
Bluetooth

With:
Office v.X for Mac
Virtual PC 6
Norton AntiVirus 8.0

You will not regret your choice. I've got the 15 inch tibook too. I totally love it!!!! Once a month or so I have to remind myself to turn the thing off and let it have a rest. Crashes are rare!

Hey and don't forget to get Photoshop, they may have a cross-grade offer. If you use it with Virtual PC you will lose a lot of processor speed in the translation.
