Does anyone own it that can speak for it?

i have a 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro. i use it as my normal lens. i'm pretty happy with it. it's sharp, the bokeh is nice, and it's very well built. the only problem i've come across is that 50mm really isn't that long. if you want life-size reproduction, you have to be about 4 inches from the subject. if you have the extra money, a 105mm might be better. if you follow the link in my profile you can see some shots taken with this lens. everything after april 28th was taken with a 20D, and all with the macro lens except the quail.

The only macro work really that Id be doing with it would be Flowers, and still life stuff. Not really into the bug scene. I was reading reviews on Fred Miranda, and they all seem to be fairly good, except for the loud AF, which doesnt really bother me because who auto focuses with a macro when you are 4 inches away? lol.

i think the 50mm would be great then. it is a little loud, as they said, but it's not bad. it's a good lens, i think you'll like it.

I have it but I also have the 105mm macro so the 50mm doesnt see the light of day much. There is one with manual focus and also one with AF only. Make sure you get the one with manual focus too. It's not a bad lens and if the only reason you're getting that one over the 105 is because of cost then it should suit you fine.
