As I look over some challenges, I find certain shots stand out that I didn't necessarily score the highest. Everything jjbeguin shoots for example (while i score his shots high, I don't always give them the highest score) ends up a favourite. Something about meeting the idea of the challenge that seems to hinder my eyes. There seems to be a difference between scoring highest and being a shot I would like on my walls. Anyone else find this discrepancy? |

This has always been the way it is on DPC. The highest scoring images are the ones that are technically flawless with a good and clear concept while undoubtedly meeting the challenge. Because the site is challenge-oriented and voted upon by people of varying photographic experience, naturally some of the more interpretive or personal shots will not score as well. Certain shots my strum a string for you but may not be for others. These shots are those that you will generally see as "middle-of-the-pack" type shots. The kind of shots that everyone agrees is clever, well-photographed, meets the challenge, etc. are the type that end up at the top of the results. So, in short, (and this is a generalization with many, many exceptions) but the top rated shots on many challenge are the more Stock-oriented shots being that they just happened to appeal to the greater masses. The fine art shots, the more artsy ones, float down from the top because not everyone can relate/appreciate those certain kinds of shots.
Just my thoughts :)

You make some good points Lee, but i don't want to knock the talented and deserving winners-rather just noticing how my own perceptions are skewed...I will look over a challenge with amazement that I didn't score a particular shot higher. My favourites are a real mix in this way.
non-sequiter- I just added your Liberty shot to my favs-beautiful. |

You captured the essence of the site, Tranquil. Well said. The intriguing part is that if one votes on every image, then one will at least allow every image the chance to strike a chord and become a memorable favorite.
It is kind of like American professional football; those drafted in the first round are a low percentage of the total of those in the Hall of Fame.
