I only joined a couple of weeks ago and have entered for Triangle and Silhouettes.
I have experienced more emotions and ups and downs in these two weeks than I can ever remember:))
I can't sleep; I dream of DPC; I have back ache from being glued to the PC; I have repetititive strain injury in my wrist; my housework has gone out the window..etc
My triangle image was not meant to set photography alight. It was meant to make people giggle a little. I enjoy humour.
Of the comments I got 90% got the joke - great. But one person felt it necessary to simply comment 'boring'. Which he is entitled to do. But this person has never entered a challenge and his email address is void.
If I find an image 'boring' I simply ignore it. Telling me so is not really constructive, and I have no right of reply when the guy can't be reached.
So to the 'boring' guy - it takes a sense of humour.

I disagree...I get absolutely pissed when I see my average falling and new comments stating how great the shot is. I know the shot is great, isn't that why I entered it...I need to know why someone voted it low. What was it that didn't work for that individual.
These are the comments I crave. We are all here to learn and we cannot improve with only positive comments; more constructive criticism on the images scored low is what will improve all of our results in future challenges. |
I wholly concur.
My entry for "triangle" is currently just a hair above a 5, and I know it can't be because of composition, focus, or theme relevance. Perhaps people stick to leaving constructive comments to the ones that have something obviously wrong, I don't know. But I'd certainly like to know what I could have done to make it better, even if someone just says, hey, it's a bit boring or trite or whatever it is that makes people see it as mediocre.
I only have 2 comments so far, both positive, and one of them is really more of a joke. I tried harder on this one than any other challenge yet, and I really thought it would be in the 6+ range. I'm a little disappointed with the score, but I'm most disappointed for the lack of comments. I've had photos score in the 3 range (as in, almost the brown ribbon) that received tons of comments. Or at least tons compared to this.

I too am new here, and have entered just 2 challenges now.
It is very frustrating to see scores lower than expected, and falling without knowing why. I was hoping by posting photos here that I could learn and grow, but how can that happen if those of you with more experience are afraid to share your thoughts. Please, if you have some constructive criticism - don't just low score me but tell me what I need to do to improve. I do also like to hear what you truly like about my work so I know that it truly is working for others and not just myself. I am new to photography, and am just learning how to use PhotoShop - I need feedback!

Linda - Looks like your 2 challenge entries are still in the voting phase. Give it time. You may have just hit some bad timing as we seem to have had a wave of challenges and comments.
From my experience, the best way to learn is to look at the winning entries' comments and all the great photos and some others' bad photos and you can learn from those as well as the comments on your own.
Generally it seems that if you are getting very few comments, your score will likely be in the 4-5 range. People mostly comment on the really bad ones, the really good ones, and the really unique or creative ones (good or bad). Another thing you can do is post a non-challenge-related pic in the forums and ask for specific feedback on it. That is where you are likely to get the most help.
Have fun & hang in there.
