Lately, I've been taking some shots with my kit lens. Yes it is a llittle soft at the corners even with it stopped down to about f8.0 but otherwise, I think it is very good $100 lens and the best 17/18-50ish lens in the less than $150 category (I think it's actually the only one in this price class).
I think it is comparable to other consumer grade lens made by Canon that usually cost about $200. I was going to replace it with a Tamron XR Di 17-35mm f2.8-4, but I don't think I need to.
Anyone agree?

The kit lens is a good starting point and carry through for a spell lens and does get a bad rap. Probably cause it's the first thing we shoot with on our new cameras, we tend to blame it on the lens and not the fact that we have fully accustomed to the new rig. Dust off the lens after we have used our new bodies for a month or so and then kit lens performs better than we first thought.

...there is however no comparison to Tamrons SP 17-35mm 2.8-4 when it comes to sharpness, colors and speed. As should be for a three hundred dollar difference.

I actually had problems finding it for Canon mount locally as they are immediately snatched of the shelf around here (think that is because Canon 17-40mm 4L street price around these parts is 799-899).

I've been using mine (Tamy 17-35mm) for big events where I need to get tons of people like the MS Walk, the Why Me walk and street faires and the results have been fantastic. I wouldn't have felt as comfortable with the kit lens...and oh yeah the front element doesn't rotate making filters usable especially circular polarizers...and it is built like a tank.
