You don't have to freeze the bee, just make him chilly_it slows them down, but doesn't hurt them. Test it out take the guy in the jar(or whatever) and put him in the fridge for a few minutes. He will get rather lethargic, take him out and warm him up and..... Then figure out how to keep him chilly long enough to get the shot.

If he crunches when you pick him up, you've left him in the fridge too long!!!!!!

Tie a string around him as a leash. I've seen video of people doing this.

we had a teacher that would catch flies and slam them on the desk to stun them, then take a long hair from someone and tie it around the fly's neck as a leash...not saying this is right or not but we enjoyed his fly on a leash a lot.

Cooler weather is the best time to take pictures of insects in their natural environment. Less chance of them flying away when you get up close.

The GOV has strict rules about how to treat bees. I'm sure this is covered under "cruelty to bees" (LOL)

Use some finger nail polish and slow him down. On the flip side, these creatures are amazing!

I once caught a small beetle (this was shortly after the bug collecting part of high school biology). As an experiment I put it in a film roll case and let him sit for a day. He was still alive...(guess he didn't breath much air). So I put a couple fish food flakes in it and intended to see if he lived for a week or so. Well...i forgot about him! Ooop!

A year later I discovered the plastic film canister and was like "what's this" heard a rattle and thought to myself... "that's odd". I opened it and dumped the contents on a table. Out fell a small dead beetle and a few flakes of fish food.

Ooops!

Now...what I didn't mention is that after about 20 minutes. That little beetle started moving again and eventually began walking.

Sure, stick me in a near airtight canister for an entire year and see if I get up and walk - and if I do I'll change my name to Lazarus!

*lol*

Do you need to attach it to a collar?
Why not teach a few basic commands like "sit" and "stay" - that would solve all the problems!

My Briard has got about as many brain cells as a bee and even she can do that (sometimes)!!!!

You mean, "bee seated" and "bee still?" I think she's trying for "play dead."

You're all bee-ing ridiculous, bee-ting a dead pun to death all over again. Bee sensible and do something productive, like bee-wailing the state of DPC or bee-moaning the arrogance of voters...

In fact, to take it a step farther, yesterday I was shooting rhododendrums from about 1' away. Most point and shoots can do that with their built-in lens, and that's plenty for a nice bubmlebee shot without any capture and freeze.

cghubble has a good point here.

I would add that it just isn't fair play to kill off the model for a photograph.

It seems to me that if the lack of a dSLR is the problem, quite a few point 'n shoots have moderate zooms and macro settings that can usually get a pretty good insect shot. And the diopters, etc. make it easier yet.

I've gotten pretty close to these guys and they are so busy with the flowers that they are not interested in defending themselves - if the photographer is at all careful not to disturb them.

I just wanna know who said they were gonna kill him? I thought the point of this thread was how to slow him down enough to shoot him without killing him.

*edit - Wait. Shoot him without killing him. That sounds even more cruel. Arrrgh!!

Try your windshield. Get on the highway, mount a fluffy pillow on your windscreen, drive a little slower and maybe that might gently stunn it on impact. Oh yeah, most of us drive and whack bugs daily and I've not heard of too many people being pulled over by an activist ......... but now I'm aware this may be an issue.
