I picked up a new monitor last evening and I was wondering what cost-effective (Read as Free or Almost Free) methods there are available to calibrate it. Any suggestions?
Yeah, I know how to use the buttons on the monitor. I am looking for calibrating it for editing photos.
In case you are interested, it is a 17" Sony XBrite and Ergobright LCD screen. Model Number: SDM-HS75P |

Make a 8x10 print of a photo with vivid colors and put it next to your monitor and tweak the buttons...

It depends on what you are wanting it calibrated for -- if just for viewing the images, this website is the easiest free way to get good results.
If you are wanting to edit images for print as well as viewing you will need to be able to switch between calibrations. The calibration for the printer is not likely to provide a good viewing environment. This is what color management does with color profiles, it provides a means to use profiles for each device the image is to be viewed on. These pofiles contain information of the differences between them (oversimplified). I have heard mention in some threads (sorry for not linking) many of the printer manufacturers have generic profiles for their printers that will work better than none.

The link posted by Gurilla is an excellent resource for software monitor calibration. It's a bit to read through and understand, but well worth the time. |
