I've got an offthewall DPC proposal called "BROWN--SEPIA--TURD". Hear me out.

Answer me this: do you check after nearly every challenge who won the "brown" non-ribbon? I do. I love those shots. Did you check out the two last place finishes for "Late Night"? Sure, they're cliche, but an all black "photo" gives me the "brown" ribbon giggles everytime. Especially when you realize that 10% of the lowest rated photos in DPC history are essentiall "all black" photos, including 5 of the bottom 15!

DPC viewers take note of the bottom feeders. I should know. In my 25 challenges entered, 2 of my top viewed photos are stinkers placing worst ("Kitty Nose with Appel": 285/285) and 2nd to worst ("Celestial Zone System": 287/288) which is worse that worst in my book.

So here's my offthewall DPC proposal: lowest rated photos of each challenge get an unofficial "non-ribbon". No icon next to the photo. No. Just the dubious distinction of placing in the septic tank. The lowest scoring photo is already in. We all call it the BROWN. Let's extend the glory on the poopdeck and give all three of worst scoring photos in each challenge color names: LAST--BROWN; 2ND TO LAST--SEPIA; 3RD TO LAST--TURD.

What are your thoughts about this color scheme? And don't give me that turdlike answer, "we shouldn't celebrate bad photography because DPC is all about learning to take quality photos". Lighten up, laugh once today and learn to celebrate those who sit in the cellar on the commode in the dark. Viva la Marron!

"Kitty Nose with Appel" got so many views because it's pure genius. The fact that it got such a crappy score is part of what makes it good.

Actually, in the profile2 revision I indeed HAD a brown ribbon. An actual one...

any goal weather its to out perform, or to sink to the bottom of a mosquito infested pond with lead boots while whisling the opening theme song to "ROCKY" sounds good to me.

What's amazing that two identical shots got two , although only slightly, different scores...

Was that under the "accomplishments"?

Well, it could be something that the user might turn off in their preferences, e.g. "Don't show turds" checkbox if someone is offended by the brown/sepia/turd. However, it looks like most of the time people really try for the brown one, so I must imagine that not a lot of them would turn this off.

So what would fourth to last be? umber? burnt sienna?

LATE NIGHT non-ribbon winners:
BROWN:

SEPIA:

TURD:

Note: no offense intended by the term "turd" for describing the quality or subject matter of this photo, just a "non-ribbon" color distinction for third from last (turd also rhymes with third).

Let's give these "non-ribbon" winners a round of applause.

not that it makes a lot of difference but shouldn't the order be
sepia
brown
turd

since sepia is lighter than brown it would seem better than the brown placed winner.

Just curious and like I said it wouldn't make a lot of difference.

I'm fine with this. I'd venture the observation that many times the bottom finishers are some very interesting photos. I certainly believe that my self-portrait-as-raindrop is a fine picture (and I stillinsist it met the challenge) and I think the moods entry clipped into this thread is a perfectly decent photo as well. It's not in the "style" DPC tends to validate, but I like it fine. I think this recognizing the bottom 3 is a fun idea. I'm proud to be down there, I really am; it shows how much I managed to annoy people with a given entry, and being irritating is a valid goal in photography, albeit a path that's doomed to low scores and horrible bottom-of-the-barrel finishes.

POND SCUM RULES!

A modest revision...
BROWN--SEPIA--UMBER (rather than "TURD")
No need to needlessly offend someone who thought their photo was something above the toilet bowl. But really, there is a strange "honor" in these lowest scoring photos. Kind of like putting the negative film into the darkroom from the old days of post-processing.

I think this a foolish idea.

I very much doubt it would be implemeted in actuallity, but it is kind of funny to me. Specially since I've got a brown and an umber =)
