I shot a bunch of pictures of vultures? this morning on my way to work. I made the mistake of turning the dial off of Auto on my Nikon and wound up with most of them overexposed by 4 or more stops. Anyway, I liked this one and was wondering if I could get some cropping advice for a 4x5 or 8x10 format. Any help would be appreciated. Also, if anyone knows what kind of bird this is. My guess is Turkey Vulture. Taken in Gilroy, CA.
Thanks!

I think you're right about it being a Turkey Vulture.
Cropping most of the tree on the left I think would work.

I'd actually experiment with an agled square crop. Taking just the center area and some of the branch layer.

Yup, looks like a Turkey Vulture to me. I'd agree about cropping out the tree on the left. That way you keep the empty space on the right (the direction the bird is facing) and a little above. I think portrait or landscape would work on this one.
If you want to see comments on what happens when you break the rule of keeping the empty space in front of the subject take a look at my Vulture entry in Minimalism.

If I was cropping this I see two things...judging by the wings I would guess this guy is landing on the top of the tree. To force the feeling I might go with an 8x10 crop placing the bird in the bottom right 2/3s of the shot giving it a flew in from the upper left.
If I wished the viewer to perceive the bird as taking off I might go with an 8x10 crop with the bird in the bottom left 2/3's give it room to fly in to in the upper right.
Either way I would crop it with just that main branch the bird is on visible.
My 2 Cents worth... |

Yes and the vertical crop suggested by jbsmithana works as well.

Although it looks like the bird is taking off or landing, it actually is just working on it's tan. ;-) There were about 10 birds in 3 trees, most of all sitting there, wings outstretched to warm up in the sun. It was a pretty neat thing to see.

My opinion only...
I like the Saj version the best. I think it has to do with my expectation that a bird takes off and lands at an angle. Granted, vultures are not the most graceful birds... I also like the way the wings 'wrap' around the empty space in that image.

I'd go with theSaj version also. I like it better than my suggestion as it has less space above the bird. Although I agree with awpoolard it seems that when I have tried that technique the comments always seem negative about empty space being behind the subject. Either way you wil ahve a good shot.
