knocked on a strangers door and asked if you could shoot something on their property? Did ya offer anything in return? A print maybe? How'd it go?

I don't think so, although I've asked people who were outside, arriving home, etc. |

I don't knock on people's doors, but the other day I asked the people on farms if I could go shoot their horses. People are really friendly when you ask them nicely. As far as giving something in return, I often offer to send final pics by e-mail. I do that with girls I run into. I get their picture and e-mail adress. ;-)

I needed this garden shed as my "outhouse". The property backs onto public land, so I was fine to be where I was standing, perfectly legal.
However, the lady of the house saw me, and came out to see what I was up to.
I happily explained to her what I was doing.
After that, she was so nice.... offered for me to come onto her property, tried to help in any way she could, just about invited me to stay for dinner or adopt me LOL.

funny you should mention this. Since the weather has warmed up, this house on my way to work must have cleared out some bushes or something revealing this little statue and when I pass it I think to myself that It is something I should take a pic of. Then think that I'd have to ask permission first and think about how awkward that would be. lol
"excuse me, but could I walk around in your garden and photograph that ugly-ish little statue?"
Hmm...maybe some day. |

I have done iut literally hundreds of times, and never been refused by a privat elandowner yet. It's different, of course, with commerical or government properties. Anyway I highly recommend it. Very liberating feeling, to accost a stranger and come away connected, so to speak.
And I'm DEAF. If I can do it, you can :-)

How do you do it? Do you give them a slip of paper, or hope they can figure out you're sign laguage of holding up the camera and pointing at the item in question?
and no I'm not being sarcastic. I'm being serious. |

I did it twice so far. Once to take pictures of the biggest poppy I have ever seen in my life, and one of them I submitted for Extraordinary challenge:
The other time I took pictures of an alley between woods:
In both places the people were very pleased that I found something nice about their property. Most time if you are nice to people they will be nice to you.

Robert is right. I feel good about it. There's a bunch of people out there who want to connect and talk about their stuff. I've had great conversations with people in those contexts.
Oh yeah, and Beetle, very nice story. See? People are nice! |

Don't do it!! I had a neighbor whose dog barked constantly. I finally went up and knocked on the door and asked if I could shoot it. With a snap of his finger, he had sicked that dog on me and it chased me all the way home!
... ...oh, wait... you were talking about taking pictures, huh? :P

Not necessarily. ;-) I have social phobia, and usually find it very difficult to photograph something even if there are simply people in the vicinity. Actually approaching someone and talking to them is (currently) beyond my ability.
But I'm beginning to think that photography is the ideal hobby for me to work on this with; especially with the DPC challenges, which help motivate me to go out and take pictures. Though I need to work on it gradually. Panic attacks and slow shutter speeds don't mix. ;-)

Just imagine the people are wearing nothing but their underwear.
And then if they answer the door and really are wearing nothing but their underwear...I'm not sure what to imagine then...
...and don't laugh so fast...it could happen at my house...actually, I think it has....hmmmmm....

I wonder if anyone has ever knocked on a strangers door and asked to take a picture of their underwear?
