Was curious if anyone knows what the drawback, if any, to buying the "imported" version of Canon lsenses from B&H vs. buying the US version of the lenses.
The imported versions are typically cheaper, and I am wondering what the difference is....

They usually carry no warranty and are sometimes referred to as grey market.

Good to know. Each seller is different though. My next question would be how does B & H rate as far as warranty repairs compared to the manufacturer?

Never had to send one back... don't know. (I got two US and one Gray market product from them so far).
I've noticed (I browsed B7H just seconds ago) that B&H is offering some rebates on the US models, bringing them at or below the gray-market prices. Search for Canon 70-200 F/4 L for example, and you'll see what I mean.

A while back I purchased a gray EF 20mm f/2.8 through B&H. After about 6 months the AF stopped working on the lens. I ended up shipping the lens with a copy of my B&H receipt to the Canon factory service center who repaired the lens without a single word about the lens being gray. I donĂ¢€™t know if this is normal or not since it was the only experience I have had like it.

Normally if a model is imported, there is no Canon USA warranty. I think for one year (same lenght as Canon warranty) B&H will repair it for you through Mack (I think) if you send it back to them.
The Canon guys at the repair center may not check wheather it's US or Import model and may repair it if it's less than one year old, but if they wanted to be sticklers, they might.

Let's be clear. The non-USA Canon lenses sold by B&H are labeled as "Imported". I believe they are exactly the same lenses as those sold as "USA" however backed by a 1 year International Warranty from Canon.
The rebates listed on the B&H site are offered by Canon, not by B&H. They can be obtained where ever you buy the Canon lens subject to the terms of the offer, read the fine print before you buy.
