The moods challenge marked my 20th submission here, and seeing as today also marks precisely fifteen months of digital camera ownership for me I thought it might be a nice time to do a little navel gazing.
Conclusion number 1: I've improved a lot - I remember I'd had my camera about a month when I took it to the store to get my first lot of prints done, I was really proud of my shots to that point and spent about 50 dollars getting a bunch enlarged under the impression that I'd hang them on the wall. Now, looking back at those photo's I can't really tell you what I was thinking. Certainly, some aren't awful, my girlfriend even has three of them gracing the wall of her home, but all but a couple would be discarded into one of my random snapshots folders.
Conclusion number 2: DPC helps... I stumbled across this site for the first time a couple of weeks after I got my camera, and was completely and utterly discouraged. I had a quick look through the site, was pretty amazed by some of the work you guys were doing, and resolved never to come back here :). After a few more months I did come back, and for want of a better phrase 'worked up the courage' to submit one of my shots. The score was pretty awful - 5.66 - but as I discovered dpc scores generally on a 4-7 scale, so that 5.6 was good enough for the 86th percentile. Since then I've seen a steady improvement in my shots, thanks in large part to the things I've learned from looking, commenting, and reading the forums here.
Conclusion number 3: Fancy cameras = Fancy scores.... In light of Joey's big win with the 1.3 megapixel monster I did a little self analysis. Obviously the number one tool is the photographer's eye, but the piece of equipment you have in front of said eye doesn't hurt. With my old point and shoot I entered 9 challenges, had an average vote received of 5.77 and an average percentile of 76.22. With my new camera my average vote received after 11 challenges is about 6.28, with an average percentile of 89.72.
Anyway, that's enough meandering, basically just wanted to say thanks to all here at dpc for sucking massive amounts of time from my life, and, in the process, helping me to improve tremendously in this terrific little hobby of ours. |

I think you are way too modest, which is actually very refreshing, but I don't have have to be modest when I speak about you. lol You are a very talented photographer and put me to shame in how well you have used your time and energy in learning your craft. I have a little Kodak, so that limits me somewhat, but I couldn't come close to your work even if I had the best DSLR in the world. I am very happy for you that you have gained so much from your time at DPC, too. I hope you continue to share here for along time to come.

I'm glad you got your courage up to submit and have become a regular here.
One point you didn't mention in talking about your different cameras was that when you racked up 5.77 with your P&S you were, relatively, inexperienced here; and the 6.28 with your new Pentax came after you had learned your way around the site. But either one of thoses averages is very, very good. I'd say you have a pretty fair amount of natural ability for photography, you have some of the "eye" that can't be developed just from practice and learning of techniques. You'll do well no matter what camera you choose.
And another point that desreves to be mentioned -a blue ribbon for your lovely Rock, Paper, Scissors winner.
Keep up the good work.
