Before I shot RAW with my digital rebel, my shots came out in about 17x11 size with a resolution of 180. Now that I am shooting RAW however, my shots are about 12x8 with a resolution of 240.
The weird thing (at least to me) is that both formats will have the same pixel size, but when I change the resolution, only the pixel size will change and not the size of the image? WHY!!!!
Are RAW shots inherently smaller??

RAW shots are the same pixel size. If you want to change the ppi setting for printing purposes (that's the ONLY thing it's useful for), uncheck the "resample image" box before changing the resolution setting. Now when you change the resolution, the pixel dimesnion stays the same (no resampling) and the size will change. Change it to 180 and you should see the same physical size yoiu previously saw.

ahh...thanks a lot kirbic! This is for printing, my school asked me to submit a photo to some competition. So I guess my next question is what size is the rebel designed to take shots at? Will lowering the resolution from 300 to 180 degrade quality all that much?

To maintain the full resolution of your original, just uncheck the "resample" box and set size, in inches, to what you want. The pixel size stays same as original (no resampling again) and the ppi will change to reflect the new image size.
You may have to crop to the right aspect ratio of course, but that's a separate issue.
