Hi all,
I find it quite weird the icons Canon use for describing the metering modes on the Rebel XT / 350D, and I think they're the same on other Canon models (10D,20D...). To make things worse, no wording is used on the menus, so I'm always struggling to know which mode I'm using. Those are the "offending" ones...
[(*)] Evaluative
[( )] Partial
[ ] Center-weighted
I find it difficult to remember which is which. To me, they should be something like...
[ ] Evaluative
[ * ] Partial (as spotty as it can get ;)
[( )] Center-weighted
How you feel about it? is just me who sees it "reversal"? Can anybody be so kind to tell me what rule of thumb you use to remember which icon refers to which mode?
Cheers,
Carlos. |

Totally agree.
The symbols don't make sense to me, either.
All my canon cameras have had this and I"m still not used to it.

Ok, so it's only Karin and me who find it weird. ;)
Can anyone tell me how you make to remember which icons belong to which mode, please? Sticking a label to the camera isn't a valid response. :) |

Evaluative takes in the biggest area and is the biggest symbol. Partial takes in more than spot but less than evaluative and is the middle size symbol.
Spot is the smallest and has the smallest symbol.

Well, I had to go to the manual, but you're quite right; I'd presumed the symbol that looks like a spot-in-screen would be the most spot-like metering, but it's the other way around. The metering algorithms on the thing are so good, I can't say I've found it a problem though: but I'd swear that I've seen the meter react around a scene in ways that would suggest it doesn't actually do what it says it does ...
