I took these photos yesterday using this lens out to 200mm and 300mm. I hand held the camera while taking the photos. I think the lens did a pretty good job.

What do you think?

Looks good. I'm in a similar situation evaluating the performance of my new 70-300 IS DO lens.

What you really need to look at is 100% crops, without sharpening. But then there's nothing out there to compare.

Do you want to start a comparison here? I'd be willing to try to shoot the same parameters as you (I have the same camera). We have to control ISO, F stop, shutter speed, distance, use the same in camera JPEG settings or shoot RAW and use the same processing, and lastly subject.

I'd love to see us do this, and get the equivalent L lens involved. I'm not convinced from my own experiences that L lenses are sharper than other lenses. (Yes, I've seen some beautiful shots from L lenses, but they are always processed).

I have had this lens for only three weeks but am getting better the more I use it. At first I did not like it a all. Yea you have a good idea, lets give it a try. we will have to use JPEG at first, to much time involved with raw. I hate the download time.

Ya have to love those RC planes...way fun to shoot...This is with the 70-200mm 4L so I guess I can't play...carry on.

ED: Nice pan on the Second shot btw.

Do you (or anyone) have suggestions for a subject? A lens test chart (there are some on the web)? A brick wall? A newspaper or book taken at an angle?

As far as JPEG settings, I alway shoot RAW, so I'll have to look to see what the lowest sharpening level is for JPEG and how we set it.

Then we need to decide whether we want to test the effects of IS on sharpening (we'll use a high shutter speed so as not to involve IS.)

Then pick the focal lengths. I have 70 but you don't, and I am not sure I can hit 75 exactly, but I can try.

75
150
200
300

I put 200 in there because I can test my 70-200/F4L lens as well in comparison (Edit: unless someone else wants to test it at 75, 150, and 200, like Andy)

F5.6
F8
F11
F22

I assume we have those F stops--I am not looking at my lenses right now. We can pick final ones after we agree to all the parameters.

ISO 100
Shutter speeds: anything above 1/200 if we can manage to get enough lighting to support the F stops above.
IS Off (and on, if we want to try that.)

Keep going, sounds like we (you are developing a plan) I have to be in and out today as I am watching 4yr old twins.

I will not be difficult, if you want to shoot raw that is ok with me. I need to start shooting raw again anyway. You pick the subject and where we will start. I kind of feel like I am letting you do all the work, but then again you look organized. sounds like you have wanted to do this for a while. So if you dont mind continue with layout.
