I'd like to change the little black dots in this image into a metallic gold color. Does anyone know how to do that? I can get to the point where I magic select the little dots in the image but how do you replace the color? I've tried simply changing the hue but it doesn't have that metallic effect. Can you sample a separate gold image and replace the black with it?
PS The idea is that I want it to look like little metallic flakes of gold.

Suggestion: you could...
Select the main character, invert the selection. Create a colour mask, choose the colours of the dots with the eye-dropper. Then simply use a yellow/gold colour to colour in the dots.
That should work. |

That's an interesting problem. I can't do a thing to make the dots look like gold flake, they are just too small. Yellow dots, sure, but any kind of a sparkling, luminance effect, no luck. And the yellow dots get lost in the BG anyway.
So I decided to see if I could create a larger-scale goldflake effect on the letter itself. This is where I am at so far, pretty blah, but I have some ideas.

I thought of the same solution as the both of you but I had the same problem. I can magic select the dots and change the color but i have difficulty making it look sparkly. It looks like a flat yellow that's kinda dull. Bear, your example was better than mine as it has at least some texture to it but I agree with you still not quite what I envisioned.

i think just changing the color of the dots to yellow won't make them look sparkly at all but just make them look flat. what makes the sparkle is light so i think you would have to go back and manually put a speck of white or a lighter yellow on each dot to simulate that glint of light. |

I don't think you'll easily get a metallic effect to pinprick dots because the effect is all down to using colours, shading and shadows which won't work for pinpricks...
Here's a basic attempt on the letter but it's not very good as the tutorial I use is for text created using the text look that can be rendered and can have the render lighting effects applied. I couldn't work out how to do that in this case.

Nice on Kavey. Manyw ays to create a meatallic effect across a surface. The interesting thing here is how to create a gold "flake" effect. I have never seen a tutorial on that one. It intrigues me.

Can you tell how you did it?

I used one of the styles actions included in the Photoshop Wow Book. I just went back in to draw in to make the specs larger. The outline can be adjusted or taken out completely.
This technique can be done also by playing around with layer styles after you duplicate the background layer. I have a much older computer so it take a long time to apply the layer itself.
Duplicate>Selected white>Inverse>applied style>redraw some specs
If I had a better computer I could've change the shadow height on each spec, etc :( Bad lag when too many layers are made.

Can you explain the action, to those of us who don't have the book? This is very nice on the specks.

my version...masked the character, used some grundge brushes in 2 or 3 colors, color adjustment, darkened the white background, used the Render/Lighting Effects filter.

If you have the dots selected, you might be able to run the emboss or extrude filter on them to give them dimensionality and tone. them apply the yellow color -- should get some kind of gradient fill. Maybe apply a Curve and USM to make them look like flakes.
Of course, I haven't actually had a chance to try this recipe myself ... |

This may not be what was wanted, but it's beautiful. Looks like the shape was cut out of one of those big gongs you see in the Far East. |

I chopped this from an art thing I did with metalic/gold leaf. Feel free to use this image to Photoshop in your gold flakes, if you like.
