The first pic of Longhorn looks bad.

google images of Windows Longhorn

Personally I'd prefer to do this: Turn your PC into a Mac

That is a old "seriously" doctored image... (mostly windowblinds stuff)

My opinon Longhorn will be to Windows XP what Windows 98 was to Windows 95. Something that is hyped up and has a new interface to make you go out and spend $300

I am happy with XP and am staying with XP....Seems as soon as I get something they are fast to update. They all want our money for life.

Longhorn Beta is Disappointing

"Microsoft needed something big to kill the hype of competitors, but screenshots show minor visual updates from the last beta, and to quote Thurrot: 'This has the makings of a train wreck.'"

:D

A day later ... Microsoft Demands Removal Of Longhorn Images

:rofl

Scroll to the very bottom of the second link to see the "banned" images of the real Windows Foghorn Leghorn, complete with "Shut Do..." button and Windows 95 icons!

:lmao

And to answer your question, it's due out in 2004 2005 2006.

Quote from the PCWorld

"The final version of Longhorn is scheduled to be broadly available in December 2006. At that time, WinFS, the unified storage system that was clipped from Longhorn last August, will be in beta testing, Allchin said. There is no target date for a final version of WinFS, he said."

By the way, with the next version of windows we'll have 64-bit computing. There are already 64-bit CPUs out there, with no SW to use their full power. *sigh*. You could neat-image series of your jpegs in no time with these...

At the same time, it will be a nightmare for SW developers. Yes, the 64 bit windows will continue to run 32-bit applications but that's the same as running 16-bit Win3.1 applications on Win32... Once you want to port your application to win64, you'll have to start worrying about structure packing, pointer sizes etc. It's like Y2K only less visible...

Then there will be a 64-bit version of photoshop that you'll be able to run only on win64... and then you'll upgrade. Mostly because you'll find a bug in the current version of your favourite SW that will be fixed only in the 64-bit version of it.

Anything is possible, believe me.

Don't forget that security updates will stop being made available for XP in 2008 (if you're lucky, sooner if M$ change their minds). You're 100% right about the "money for life" bit though : )

I like windows, but longhorn is useless: most of the features will be made available for xp, and the really important things (WinFS) aren't going to be available for a long time.
So don't hold your breath, xp is going to last for a good many years yet.

Sorry, I lied about XP only being supported till 2008 ...
Microsoft Windows XP ... Mainstream Support Retired: 31-Dec-2006

It looks like you'll be able to pay for extended support on XP Pro till 2011 though, so that's okay then ; )

If I have to change operating systems again it will not be to another Microsoft product.

I can't wait to ditch Microsoft. Too many years...too many problems.

Word, dude. My next machine's going to be a dual-booter. OS Tiger for most everything and Windows for the games. I'll probably spend more time in Windows anyway because of said games, lol, but that's it. Windows just p's me off.
