I've seen these on a few sites...

Canon Life Size Converter EF

How do they work? has anyone used these with say a 70-200mm f/2.8 (is that even possible?)

I think it only works with the 50mm macro.

Yep, the life size converter is the (optional) companion to the 50mm macro, bringing the maximum magnification up from 1:2 to 1:1.

Edit:
you can use extension tube(s) with the 70-200 to get closer focus, it works fine but the focus range is quite limited (I've tried it). Another alternative is a high-quility "diopter" such as the Canon 500D. Don't buy a cheap diopter (single element), it will degrade the image unacceptably. The 500D is a two-element design, and is supposed to work pretty well.
