I've been looking for a good wide angle prime to use as a walk around lens and in somewhat low light situations. The two lenses I've been looking at are the Canon EF 35mm f/2 and the Canon EF 24mm f/2.8. Has anyone had any experiences with either of these lenses? I wouldn't mind other lens suggestions, although I'm trying to keep it under 300, preferably 250 max. I'll take any suggestions.
Thanks

The Sigma 20mm f/1.8 always gets rave reviews. I normally stick with Canon, but in the WA prime arena, their offerings are a bit sparse. The Sigma is pretty fast too, but is a litle more expensive than your target. On a 1.6-crop cam, it "feels like" 32mm, which is nice coverage.

I wish i had the funds for that lens, but im not prepared for that kind of purchase right now. Do you have any experience with any other Sigma primes? The SIgma 28mm 1.8 EX DG looks like an option for me as well.

Unfortunately I don't have enough knowledge of the other Sigma WA primes to be of much use :-(

try this site.
The lenses are rated on many factors, and end up with an overall rating on a 1-5 scale. canon L glass is 4+. Most glass is lower (duh!) but the results are comparable overall and you can search /rank by quality or brand or focal length/type. Very interesting to read up on the different lenses and how they compare.

The 35mm lens on a APS-C camera is really the closest thing, in terms of FOV, to a normal, 50mm lens in 35mm. (At least until the Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens comes out) I wouldn't consider it a wide angle lens at all. |

Thanks for the link Prof fate. It seems that the Canon 24mm 2.8 is a pretty good lens for its price. The sigmas don't seem to be as good. I posted the 35mm because I don't necessarily mean a lens for wide angle shots, I have my kit lens for that, but I want a good walk around and portrait lens. I was just looking for something wider than the 50mm 1.8
